OK, I'll call time for this one and if it goes well, we can do another one soon. I have some interesting ideas ... ;)

So, guys and gals, here is the current playlist on Soundcloud of the entries :

https://soundcloud.com/hybridian-music/sets/sos-one-synth-challenge-april18/s-ir24T

I'll leave it a few days (at least) before I reveal who has submitted the tracks. And then I'll reveal all some time next week - who did what on what synth. (although even I don't know a couple of them so it will be fun for me as well).

It's a varied playlist with quite differing styles of music and some synths that I think will raise the odd eyebrow. As the drinks dispenser would say : Share and Enjoy!

Hi all, I got my entry in a bit late last night. Since it was a smartphone-mic draft anyway, I'll just throw it out here: http://exts.ch/files/One%20synth%20take%20three.mp3

The sequencer was the "new toy" and got quickly reconfigured by the kids before I could finish adjusting and grab a proper recording the next evening… oh well.

I won't post the details here yet in case you want to guess — keep in mind its a single take with no overdubbing. (Spoiler alert it's in the metadata.)

We'll also have a late entry directly into this thread from a new member, so hopefully his post will clear quarantine soon. Welcome Nate!

This has been fun. I can see that people are starting to listen to the tracks. There's a nice variety in there of styles as well as synths. So dig in have a blast. The levels do vary though as I didn't want to mess about with the mixes, so there might be a couple of surprising jumps in volume.

As I said, I'll give it a few days then confirm who entered. Next week, I'll start spilling the beans. In the meantime, enjoy!

Really wondering who recorded what and what they used.

I would like to comment on all the tracks, but if I do, then I'd have to comment on my own!
So i'm picking a random 3

EastGermanBoogie
Not sure, but I think I recognise the vocal voice on this one.
Realistic drums + Vocoder - Guessing maybe a Roland JD-X? ?

New Black Moon I'm thinking, there are loads of diverse sounds on this, I would bet on something very powerful so a soft synth ?

X - Air On A C synth 02180418

Nicely put together track, realistic cymbals suggests something digital maybe a big 90s workstation or maybe Nord Stage ?

Interesting guesses there JS. :)

One thing to note : I did start off by saying that drums could be excluded / sample based. So I'd suggest not worrying about those which are more natural sounding - let's concentrate on the rest of the instrumentation for a hint to the synth.

Edit : also, I've been through the list of gear and can't see anything with an inbuilt vocoder, so that might be a red herring as well. I'm guessing that falls under 'fx' .. :D

Agreed! Struggling to guess any!

Are friends Electric
A friend has a JDXi and her demos sound a lot like this! Recorded in-synth?

Cars
No idea but whoever did it really captured the energy of the orig.

East German Boogie
The bass sounds like a minimoog, but the other parts could be anything.
Love that bass sound actually.

Temple of Gatedom
Doesnt sound like my 80s Rolands, the filter has a different sound, doesnt sound like a minimoog… er.. maybe korg. Does it count if I guess which synth it isnt??

Can’t tell whether all the detuning across these tracks is genuine analog or well programmed/synthesized digital. Has been fascinating listening to these.

Two stand-outs for me at the moment are New Black Moon and Air On A C synth. They really underline the diversity of entries, are quite unique, and both highly detailed.

Time for a Friday Bump!

And a clue .... how about the names of the composers? I think that might help in a couple of cases but not much elsewhere .. ;)

The culprits are (in alphabetical order) :

* ArkieBoy
* BillB
* Blinddrew
* DaveB (Me ... and, just for the record, no K2000 was used on mine)
* Folderol
* Jumpeyspyder
* MarkyC
* Ready Salted Chris
* Richie Royal

Interestingly, even I don't know what a couple of the entries used! (One of those I have suspicions about, and the other is 'a recent monosynth' apparently)

I can tell you that two of them are plugins.

And two of them are well known VA synths

No modern workstations used it seems.

Great work.

Let's do another soon, I've just bought my first ever synth and wouldn't mind a shot!

I think I've identified Folderol's and Dave B's but I have no idea of the others. :)

Please note - my silly, spoofy ditty was just meant as a harmless bit of fun which took 30 seconds as I was waiting for me toast to do. Didn't mean for it to end up there and did message Dave a couple of times to remove it but they don't seem to have been sent as I can't see them in the outbox.

Apologies for wasting anyone's time who listened to it.

Maybe u can dump that masterpiece Dave? :)

(It was done on one synth tho a gives a flavour of the true potential of the Matrixbrute)

As u were.

Cheers.

I can bin it if you want Chris, but I'd say leave it there. Like you say, it gives a flavour of the synth. And I thought it was another synth...
