New to me CS-30L

Postby Jumpeyspyder » Mon Apr 16, 2018 11:34 pm

I didn't need another synth...

......but it would have been cruel to leave it all alone in a shop ;)

grabbed myself a bargain - a quick test at lunchtime and seems to be working fine

(wish it wasn't so heavy)

A new piece of old gear is invariably inspiring.

Don't forget that most of those Yamaha CS synths were Hz/V, so if you are going to hook it up to a MIDI/CV converter you'll need one that can perform that trick.

To quote Monty Python - "You lucky b@$3&*#!!"
:protest:

Excellent - very jealous, but very pleased for you.

Don't forget the comment about Hz/V - can the BSP do that?

Yes - very, very lucky :)

BSP does Hz/V as well as Octave/Volt

Would be fun to try this for one synth challenge - but I'm already halfway there with another synth.

Again, just out of interest, what kind of shop - no need for names, but was it a charity shop? I have long dreamed of walking into one of those and finding something exciting. Hasn't happened yet.

Its one of the high street "Cash.. Conv.." type shops.

It's rare these days to find bargains like this - the shops normally check the value of stuff online.
In this case the model number on he CS20L is not advertised anywhere on the instrument in big lettering. (I only recognised it as a CS by the style but didn't know the model when i bought it)

My guess is they didn't know what to google to find a value.

You hold 'Bargain of 2018' so far, sir. That is a steal!!

Just shows you, it does still happen. I've had some luck myself from time to time, but that is a beauty!

How much??? Blooming heck! That is an insanely lucky find!

I've been trawling ebay and Facebook for a decently priced old synth and found nothing of that kind.

Some people have all the luck, you lucky *%£%&" :protest:

An evening with a CS30 :headbang:

Delightful and infuriating at the same time.
I was nearly ready to take it back to the shop after an hour trying to figure out the routing!

Why did they put the filter mode selectors on the VCA section of the control panel ?
Why do you select the VCO waveform on the VCF panel ?
VCO levels / Mixer controls all over the place.

A lot of oddities to take in, but starting to get some good sounds - even persuaded the BSP to play nicely with V/Hz

If you have any taste in:- music, video or sound quality - I warn you not to look at this:-

Is this the model with the built-in sequencer?

Also what is the filter like? A friend had a Yamaha CS15D which had the weediest filter I've ever heard on an analogue synth.

It sounds similar to the ARP Odyssey in having some odd design choices, including that familiar waveform selection at destination points, rather than sources, but similarly to the Odyssey it will probably begin to make sense with familiarity.

I had a Yamaha CS-5 as my first monosynth and I grew to loathe it. When what you truly aspire to is a MiniMoog a CS-5 is a disappointing experience! These days I think I could appreciate it for what it is - and the honky oscillators and weedy filter could be exploited for their own merits.

If the CS-30 shares the family traits of the C-5 then you may also be a bit disappointed with some of its foibles, but I would urge you to learn to love it for what it is.

And if you can't, then give me a shout when you decide to sell it!
