What is this keyboard instrument?

Postby Adam Inglis » Sat Aug 31, 2019 10:39 am

This shot from a Leonard Bernstein demonstration of a Stravinsky piece at Carnegie Hall shows a shot of the orchestra, with a harpist in the mid-ground, and a short-scale keyboard instrument being played in the foreground. Can anyone identify the keyboard? It has an odd, staccato, almost xylophone-like sound..

Yes, probably a 3-octave Celesta/Celeste.

As further confirmation...

If think I found the score for that part and the instrumet is noted "Celesta."

One video on Youtube shows the score along with the music.

Thanks all!
I wasn't aware of the physical reality of the celeste - I guess I'd always assumed it was a mallet percussion type affair!
Cheers

You see the entry at 2:33. It's definitely a celesta.
Nerdy side-note. That part was given to a glockenspiel in the original version, but was written out in the revision, and the part assigned to the celesta.
