The trouble is Elf, with the Collosus Windows 10 won't keep updating, also the Collosus won't finally need better hardware to run after downloading that last power hungry upgrade, or stop working after that essential OS download.

I've been making music on computers since the Commodore 64 - OS updates (even entire OSses!) will come and go, but I'm still making music. Of course certain software will demise, but it's really nothing to be concerned about - another, better option, will be along in a minute!

It all started to go wrong for me when I splashed out on a Mac, and gave up my 12yo and still working Windows XP machine, that was fantastic, and I made the bulk of my output on that computer. That was a major and painful lesson.

Just dropping by this thread to say that I still really want to see this synth in real life. :)

Don't, you'll want one.
There is no doubt, this is a beautiful thing, but.....sonically there are a lot of other, cheaper options that will get you to the same place, this is a statement, and not necessarily a musical one.
If you can imagine, a company decided to make an exact replica of a Ferrari F50, right down to the last detail, and the driving experience is exactly the same, and, it's cheaper than an original. Who's going to buy it? It's not a Ferrari, and it still costs a lot to the average punter, £100,000 instead of £500,000, but it's still a lot, and you still don't own a Ferrari.
I'd feel the same way about the Collosus.

BTW I spotted that Synthi 100 at the Athens conservatoire:

Just sat in a room used for teaching small children music. I believe it was restored a few years ago and is still used for teaching and performance.

Sounds like a bit of a waste to me Andy - they could at least hire it out to visiting composers/gearheads :headbang:

I think they do let others use it, I was on a quick visit so didn't have time to investigate further. If anyones in Athens they should check it out.

Trouble is I'd need to stay for at least a couple of weeks to really get my head around it.

Couldn't you use one of those matrix-style bullet camera setups to get your head around it more quickly, and then study the playback in slo-mo?

Martin

If they sold it they would raise enough money to build a nice computer based music studio.....
