Behringer K2 - MS 20 emulator thingy..

I'll just leave this here and go buy some Class As.

I never had any lust for the Korg's MS synths, but there are a lot of people out there who will leap on this. It should do well.

a few weeks ago I watched the behringer video that they made for their new clone K2 (the ms-20...). On a daily basis I'm watching Synth-videos but those sounds really catched my ear. So I preordered one at Thomann and a few daysw ago it arrived. Wow! I compared a few patches I found on Youtube soundwise - and (we all know the YouTube-sound-quality...) couldn't find a difference.
If someone wants to hear a few examples i patched (kick, hihat, bass) - here's a video I made:

As someone who owned an MS20 (and MS50) in the 80s, I'm disappointed that not attempt has been made to make this fully modular.

Once you've got over the novelty of being able to use patch leads, you realise that it offers nothing that a conventional synth with decent switchable routing already has. To get the best out of a modular synth you need access to the signal path as well as the modulation control voltages and triggers.

This version doesn't even feature the improvements of the recent Korg re-issue.

It's strange, but this one has piqued my interest a little bit. I think it's because it's not another minimoog / big beefy American sounding thing which is nice for a change. I know that some people aren't huge fans of the ms-20, but sometimes different is good.

What I am waiting for is the ProOne clone. Yes, I know what I said above, but a part of me is really curious about getting hold of some form of proone and this is cheap enough for me to take a punt on.

Hi Cornozito, and welcome to the SOS Forums!

With a helpful post like that, you'll soon make lots of friends here ;)

Oh, and it might be helpful to post somewhere the patches for your kick, hihat and bass sounds - we seem to have a lot of MS-20 owners of one form or another (including my Retro Expansion version).

:o

The MS was always on my wish list !

It might have been a design aim to keep the look & feel very similar to the original style.
Does the Behringer Neutron cover the patchability aspect with a similar sound ?

I agree that the patchbay could probably be replaced with appropriate switches but it does add to the iconic look of the instrument and encourage out of the box interfacing.

The MS could seem a bit flat with a "weak" 12dB filter when quickly compared to its rivals in a shop test but when you get to know your way around it, it is powerfull and crazy. I would definitely buy one @ £300

I would be interested to hear how the external input performs compared to the original

IMO the MS20 only achieved it's full potential when partnered with another full-modular synth such as the MS50.

And there was nothing wrong with the Filters. 12dB/Octave might sound a bit weedy on paper but in action they were the best thing about this synth.

I see from the photographs the trigger inputs appear to be S-Trig as on the original. Does that also mean the CV inputs are the original Hz/V? If so I hope that the modulation inputs are calibrated at Octave/V at maximum. I wouldn't fancy having to add another mod input and trim pot on this to make it work with Octave/V synths.

for me, Midi control was the game changer, leaving both hands free to modulate synth parameters as per 80s/90s dance.
( I wonder if Zuken is back from his shopping trip ?
:smirk:
)

Indeed there is nothing wrong with 12dB filters, even Moog offer this, they are just different. The Korg filters are one of the elements that made the MS20 a classic.

In the video the Behringer man says the filters are 24 but they are 12dB as corrected in the comments. He also says they "added a trigger switch", the MS20m has a trigger switch which might suggest that Behringer have taken their insperation from the keyboardy MS20s. The fact its in a module might just be Behringer Eurorack compatibility , does that extend to signal paramaters ???
I dont know.

The Korg module has both Hz & Oct in with Hz out
Din & USB as well of course
S-trig,
FM and Sync.

Yep, they're the current thing Stephen (but then I'm rather biased towards them).
