Aka S900 intermittent fault

Postby Oliver21 » Sat Sep 28, 2019 10:23 am

I stopped using my S900 many years ago and am now having a studio clearout.

When it turns on the S900 works absolutely fine (disk drive fine) but it intermittantly won't turn on. It could be when its been on for a while and already warm then it won't go on. The whole this is dead except the disk drive light briefly lights on power up and power down. When trying to power it up (and it won't go on) I've noticed after about 1.5 seconds there is a small click coming from the right hand side of the unit.

I've had the top off and tried to re-seat the available plugs and waggle the leads but this has no effect. It feels like something is preventing it starting up when its warm. If I leave it to go cold it usually starts up.

Any advice gratefully received. Cheers!

It powers up from cold but not from warm?
And.. after it has been on for some time, does it switch off and on?

Sounds like power supply issue, maybe cracked solder joints.

Just checked it again and it isn't powering top from cold. When it was on yesterday it powered up and down OK but when left for a little while (not long enough to go completely cold) it wouldn't power up.

Is the power supply something thats replaceable on this unit? Or how hard is it to fix the dry joints myself?

Thanks for the reply Adam

Just to bring this to a conclusion, Oliver brought the S900 over the other day and indeed, it turned out to be a cracked solder joint behind one of the power connectors - on the 5V pin which is probably the one that handles most current. I re-flowed all the joints under the power supply connectors so hopefully it will carry on working for a good while longer.
