Firstly just listened to your latest rough mix. There’s some wonderful ideas and it’s well executed.
Thanks for listening and providing feedback!

I agree with Martin that the snare does sound a bit “out” given the grand epic scale of the music.
I had one of those, “oh, duh!” moments late last night, thinking about this very subject. :)
It occurred to me that sat in my desk, unused, are two Lexicon reverb units and they have a brilliant gated reverb. Going to try running the snare through the Lexicon over the weekend and see what I get!

The guitar chucka at 6m I think could be closer in the mix to really give it some welly a la Petrucci!
Noted, thank you! I think the entire solo ended up being too loud! =p

The closing bass at 8 10 I think is a little harsh with the lead line maybe a more Taurus type tuba swell might work.
Great idea! Will see what I can do, thanks!

Anyway these are but things that just struck me, I’m impressed with it, great work and when’s the live event? - it would work well at somewhere like the Eden Project with a full solar eclipse as a backdrop!

Ian
Thanks! We’re actually planning on using those “Starfield projectors” live. :)
A solar eclipse would work as well lol. ;)

Okay, re-re-visited the snare drum. Here's just Part 1 with a different snare setup.

Any/all feedback is appreciated, thanks!

The snare is much better with the gated reverb, although the first four exposed hits at 1:04 still sound a little stark to me in isolation - you could add a short normal reverb tail to those in my opinion.

Perfection is within sight!

Yup, one step ahead of you! :) There is a short room ambience added, but it’s pretty short and subtle as I have just enough to spread the snare a bit. After playing it back, I realized that it also needs a sustained hall ‘verb as well. I agree — Gated drum sounds immense, but only when it has something to scale against. Another version coming soon ... thanks again for all the feedback, I appreciate it!

Thanks again for all the feedback! Now that that is settled, I’ll be mixing down stems for rehearsals.

Already started work on the next song, Carrousel, based on my favorite sci fi movie of 1977...

I like this a lot - though my brain wants a TR707 snare instead :-)

No worries, it's all good. I think you should have a ton of fun getting this worked out live too. Good work
