Coming in early March, I am very intrigued!

I own two AY3 modules and they are brilliant.

I loved working on game music and sound FX for the Sega Megadrive, because suddenly you had all those metallic timbres that were perfect for creating sword clashes and the like.

I re-jigged my existing PC-based editor to work with the Megadrive via a plug-in interface that mimicked its ROM cartridge, and because my interrupt-based music/fx routine was called 50 times a second I could also change sound parameters at that rate if and when required.

My biggest success here (after all the typically required explosions and projectile weapon sounds) was the sound of a trickling stream, which sounded most realistic 8-)

MegaFM sounds like great fun - I wonder if you can change its parameters 50 times a second, as that opens up huge possibilities for the sound designer ;)

Wow, your technical level far outstrips mine!

Hi Ben,

That wasn't my intention in posting - I was just thrown in at the deep end when clients asked for Megadrive music.

For me the magic of the Sega Megadrive sound system (and it was my first real experience of FM synthesis), was discovering just how much more flexible FM was when you could radically change parameters (even the choice of basic algorithms) a few dozen times a second.

It was rather a case of serendipity (you never quite knew what sound would merge next as you fiddled with the sound parameters), but the combination of grunge and metallic overtones were a real inspiration!

lol I think my response came across wrong in text. I am in awe of your abilities and wish I had them!

No worries - if you're interested, here's one of my Megadrive game audio commissions, completed way back in the depths of time (1995) ;)

I even get a credit near the end of the video for 'Audio Compositions and Programming'

This is so cool, Martin - I was enjoying your works as an 11 year old playing on my friend's Megadrive

Edit: Sorry, realised that might make you feel old! Intended more in the spirit of

Great work Martin - I know what you mean about the metallic sounds!

For a synth based around a Sega Megadrive you might like this, if you've not seen it already. Well, the synth is the megadrive, but the control surface exposes loads of parameters you can tweak in realtime https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-02iH6l308 ;)
