One Synth Challenge IV - The Voyage(r) Home

Postby Dave B » Fri Mar 13, 2020 8:53 pm

Self Isolation getting you down? New year blues kicked in a bit late? Those evil seasonal credit card bills still forcing you to cut down on evenings out?

Why not forget about it all and lock yourself away with a nice synth? Yes folks, it's finally time again - One Synth Challenge time to be precise. I know you are all chomping at the bit so let's get straight on with it. As with last time, the rules are :

1. You use one - and only one - synth for the music. As many instances as you like and layer it up in your DAWs (obvs). But just one. And use it for as much as you can. Push yourself to really get deep into it. Any type of synth - it doesn't have to be analogue - but stretch yourself.

2. Drums can be samples / drum machine / whatever. Look, if you really want to do it _all_ on one synth then that's fine and dandy, but, unless you have one helluva modular, the drums will probably sound better if you use something more drum-y.

3. Effects? Sure, why not. I mean, if you want to do a whole track with a tone generator and an Eventide, then who am I to stop you? Go for it.

4. Music? Original, cover, specially written, some old bit of nonsense - we'll take anything. Knock yourself out : anything goes.

5. Begged or borrowed kit? all good round here. If you fancy something and can get a loan for the duration, then why not. The idea is to push yourself, so feel free to grab something that you've not used before and have a blast

Timewise, how about a deadline of Easter Saturday? That's 4 weeks away. That way, we have the Sunday for the unveiling of the tracks and the Monday evening to put us out of our suspense.

Most importantly : have fun!!

:D

I'd love to, but I have a couple of huge jobs in progress. I'll see what I can fit in, and make it a chance to do something simple and off the cuff. I have an idea...

I could well end up doing something, but I'm going to struggle to pull off anything dramatic. Partly because everyone now knows Roland HRM can produce convincing results - and the SY1000 I have on my studio floor is even better at this than the VG99 I used in the first round of this challenge - and also since DaveB is now in the same band as I am, he knows all my gear.

That said I am now working from home for the foreseeable which saves me 90 minutes a day commute so I might sneak something in ...

Oh nuts, my first idea doesn't really work; I'd been sitting on the idea since the last challenge but hadn't tried it out until last night. Back to the drawing board for me :lolno:

Sorry - for anyone new, submission works as follows :

1. Produce your final mix - ideally full bandwidth (unless you have space restrictions) so a full 24/44.1 wav is good.
2. Upload your track somewhere (google drive, dropbox, wetransfer, etc)
3. Get the link to that file
4. Send me a PM with the link and a description of what you used
5. I will grab the file, stash it chez moi and send you a PM back when I've got it. Hopefully I an do that same day but please don't make any links too short lived

This can be done from anytime now until the cutoff deadline (midnight of the 11th April).

On the morning of the 12th, I will create a Soundcloud playlist with all of the tracks available (anonymously) and post a link to that here. We can then all listen to them and see if we can guess who did what, with what. On the Monday, I'll post which track is which.

Simples! :)

One of you mad, mad people has already locked themselves away for a couple of days and submitted a track!

Blimey! I'm still trying to work out what I'll use - let alone write anything... :D
