Sign of the times, your last big splash, what synth?

Postby Arpangel » Sat Apr 04, 2020 4:54 pm

Been thinking of splashing out on a synth I’ve either always wanted, or something I sold in the past and now regret, before I pop my clogs.
I’m thinking of an EMS Synthi, a Rhodes Suitcase 88 ( not a synth I know, but)
An ARP2500, or a Moog Memory Moog, and that Analogue Solutions Colossus looks tempting too.
Just wondering what others would get, in the circumstances...

It was a Komplete Kontrol Mk2 about a year ago and then a few months ago Arturia Collection v7, nothing to do with recent events. I’m very happy with virtual kit these days.

I'm a guitar player but if I had the room and money it's be a B3, Leslie and Minimoog. I've got as close as is practical with my Berry Model D and the Juno D I've had for a while. They do more than I'll ever need TBH.

Finally taking this recording lark seriously (and recording my Gypsy Jazz CD)........

There's loads I'd just like the play with for a bit, but nothing I need, and certainly nothing that doesn't really give me anything significant over what I already have...

Right now it would be a Hammond XK5.

I've been lucky enough to have indulged in pretty much every synth for which I've ever lusted. Most have gone, but a few have stayed for life. Others I've knowingly shunned (e.g. a tape-based Mellotron!)

My last main purchase was a Yamaha motif which i still have but don't play so much now, it's a case of making better use of what I have (software as well as hardware based)

I ordered (successfully it seems) a Korg Arp 2600 and justified it as my 'one chance to buy' bucket list synth - it's yet to arrive. If I was to pick another it would be to re-buy a Jupiter 4 having stupidly sold mine last year.

Interesting, software has never done it for me, it just feels like I don’t really own anything, like downloading music from the internet, it’s not like holding a CD, or even better, a record.
I’ve got NI Komplete, and the Arturia V Collection, but rarely use them. I used Reaktor once, as the only instrument for one of my CD's, but that was it.
I love the ARP2500, I know that wouldn’t be just a bucket list purchase, it would definitely bring something new to my music.
Also the Rhodes, those two things would still be exciting to own.

If you are getting a Rhodes suitcase, be sure to buy a small forklift truck to go with it.

Instant gratification is actually pretty good. It's fast as well.

That is a problem, and a I would be gigging with it too. Mind you, an ARP2500 is a bit of a back breaker too, I’ll have to budget for a van.
