Ultra compact mixer for small flight/case synth set-up.

Postby Arpangel » Sun May 10, 2020 8:12 am

I’ve decided to build a very small synth set-up into a flight case, or Pelican Case.
I need a maximum of two stereo inputs, and maybe one mono.
The smallest footprint normal type mixer I’ve found is the Yamaha MG06, controls need to be on the top, but I’m open to ideas.
I’ve got a MicroFreak, a Zoom CDR70 pedal, a Pocket Operator, and 5 Euro modules on rails built into the case, so space is at a premium.

There are a number of 19" rack line mixers available, how does that fit your plan?

Do yourself a favour, wear earplugs at gigs.

If space is at a premium a euro-rack mixer is probably the best option.

For example:

...although there are dozens of other options out there.

Lots of small options from Behringer and Mackie such as the 402 etc.
However, I stumbled across an Art Power Mix 3 which looks a candidate...handy to have phones too.

Didn’t think of a Eurorack option, that’s an idea, and yes, I’d like phones, all of the external mixers have phone outputs.
I’m also looking at putting some sort of built on speaker/speakers in there too, so I’d need a feed for those, Euro could be an option, as there are speaker modules, but they’d take up valuable module space. I’m looking for a very small pair of powered speakers ideally.

Just thought I’d report back on my rather nervy mixer purchase, my "glorious" Thomann T-Mix 502 arrived yesterday, well, it works! :)
The build quality is at least as good as a small Mackie, all metal casing, feels tough, sturdy knobs etc. And it sounds fine, for what I’m using it for, so £29 well, spent, and it fits into my briefcase nicely.
Review over...

Yes, I’d say the build quality is definitely better than some other main branded options, I’m really surprised at how sturdy it is. Don’t know how good the mic-pre is, but that doesn’t matter, as I’m not using it!
