How do I get this bass sound? Depeche Mode World In My Eyes

Postby Chimera » Sun May 24, 2020 12:38 pm

Following on from another thread I am trying to reproduce the bass from World In My Eyes.
https://youtu.be/nhZdL4JlnxI

The bassline starts at about 1 minute in. I don't have a Moog unfortunately so I have tried on my BSII. Using compression I get a nice punchy sound but I wondered if this is a straight forward synth sound or if perhaps it has been bounced to audio and then edited to make the beginnings and ends of notes more distinct.

Any thoughts please?

It just sounds compressed to me.

High compression ration with fast attack and release times?

The bass line has prominent harmonics which cut through even on speakers with weak bass. We still hear the bass line clearly, just higher up. Maybe other instruments are doubling on the bass line which gives a similar effect.

Yes, an exciter in Logic helps. The ends of the notes have improved now I've quantised the note ends. Sloppy timing :headbang:

It is a recording so the bass guitar is heavily processed so it is hard to get the act sound.

Classic DM. I always liked the snare in that track. Sounds like someone stifling a sneeze down a well.

It sounds like a Roland synth to my ears... reminds me of my old jx3p.

The important element I hear is the doubled (same synth?) an octave above with the filter opening rhythmically.

Innerchord, I got quite close using a Minimoog VST that defaulted to a saw with 32, 16, 8 feet on the 3 oscillators - so that supports your theory. I am using stock Logic compressors - and I am no expert on compression techniques - I am struggling to get the attack without audible artefacts.

Alan Wilder has answered questions about this track before. Each time he answers that it is made up of multiple sounds, and proudly, that he is responsible for that bass line.

From http://oldsite.recoil.co.uk :
Where did you find the snare drum sound on the LP version of 'World In My Eyes' ?

Can't remember exactly. I think we made it from scratch or it could be a combination of analogue and a sample.

Is it a mini moog bass we hear on 'World In My Eyes', 'Halo', and 'Enjoy The Silence' ?

Again, can't remember exactly -most likely a combination of moog and Flood's Arp.

Also, in the same series of Q+A, he repeats his dislike for Roland synths (too clean), so I doubt there's any of that in the bass sound.

Ha! So much for my impeccable discernment.
