Need guidance to pick a keyboard capable of using as midi controller

Postby firow » Mon Jul 06, 2020 8:17 pm

hello guys
I am very new in keyboards and midi controllers
I know I can buy a midi controller easy to connect to daw like fl studio and start to create music
But I do like to have a synthesizer keyboard with some pre installed sounds to use as standalone keyboard without vst and maybe increase its sound by installing more sample and loops from USB connector .
My problem is I don't know what kind of keyboard is suitable for me that has both standalone and midi vst support at the same time

I found
Yamaha Psr e453 and it looks like to support midi input (not sure that I can install new sample and loops into that) and not sure it could play my vst sounds from daw i think it only records the keyboard pre installed sound in daw

Is there any device that I'm looking for or not
I wanted to buy innovation launchkey 61 but it has no sound by itself

I searched Google but it wasn't clear
My budget is around 250 to 300$

Sorry for long or maybe confusing details
I don't mind if I get a second hand device either
Thanks in advance

I personally use a ca. 1992 Korg T2 for my MIDI controller. It has all the functionality I need, as I tend to do any parameter changes in my DAW with a mouse if I need to, plus it has a great (if somewhat dated) set of sounds.

If you're planning on using it as a more performance oriented controller, and want to tweak your LFOs or other parameters in real-time, then you're going to want to look for something a little more modern that will allow you to map faders and knobs to specific MIDI controllers for that purpose. I know NORD makes several keyboards that can do that, as well as Yamaha and Roland (and Korg, for that matter). All have great internal sounds as well, but the closer you get to present day, the closer to the top of your price range you'll pay.

Hope this helps with your decision.

Hi and welcome! Any keyboard with midi out will control your VSTs, that’s not a problem at all. However, a keyboard that loads in samples is complicated and generally much more expensive than one that has built in sounds. What sort of sounds are you looking for?

A secondhand Korg Triton, great keyboard, Midi out, sampling capability, and if you want more controller knobs just stick a Behringer X Touch on the front panel.
A Triton Studio 61 will set you back around £350, it has great sounds, and great programming potential, plus a really good built in arpeggiator and sequencer.
