Roland TR-8S V2 Firmware

Postby The Elf » Tue Aug 11, 2020 10:27 am

Roland have updated the TR-8S firmware.

https://www.roland.com/uk/support/by_product/tr-8s/updates_drivers/e93722f3-45ec-4c0b-80b0-71a11603f6ea/

Some interesting goodies in there, including FM drum sounds, ring modulation and saturation. Reverb send from delay (hoorah!).

But still no CR-78...

Doesn't look like a full FM engine I see, but morphing between 3 presets per voice, unless I'm missing something from having watched the review too quickly? Still though, it'll be interesting to try out. Good to see them adding something a bit esoteric for what it is.

I have no idea what I'm doing.

I'm quite tempted by the TR-8S. I wasn't that into the original TR-8, but the S seems to have been matured into quite a good box. Quite liking the new features as well.

Thanks for that Elf. :)

would have rather them provide the CR-78 model. Much needed. Wonder why they are avoiding this much cherished drum machine?
Or make a boutique version. To my knowledge the CR-78 has never been properly replicated in hardware.

I've just added my own CR-78 samples to my TR-8S, but it would have been nice to have modelled versions.

I'll admit to wishing I'd been a fly at the design meeting that omitted the CR-78 from their 'flagship' drum machine, not even offering it as an official samples-only download... yet gave CR-78 sounds to the Jupiter X! How Roland arrive at such decisions intrigues me! :headbang:

Totally. I have a feeling it's coming. It's what everyone has been waiting for since the TR8 version 1. Would much rather have a CR-78 model than a 606 or 707. 707 can be more properly replicated with samples.

Hi, where can I find the CR-78 samples you mentioned? I'd Like to enrich my TR-8S with them as well.

Thanks for sharing, Elf.
Not that there is any shortage of drum samples online, but is there a simple way to convert those files to WAV for non TR-8S owners?

I don't know, but there are plenty of CR-78 samples out there. I have a shed-load of wav files here - I condensed them down to a 'best of' for my own use:

These are 32-bit 48kHz wav files, but you can convert them to any format that suits you.

Let me know if it's to much off-topic, but because it isn't a real question I found it unnecessary to start a new thread/post. Anyhow, I've just emailed Roland Product Support with the following questions/suggestions. Was wondering I these are shared by other TR-8S users.

My compliments for this awesome drum machine. Still, I have some questions and improvement suggestions. (I’m still running v1.13, about to update to v2.)

1) Setting Flt Reso (for sampled patches) from 0 to 1 makes a huge difference, way less subtle than the resonance settings of the Inst FX LPF and HPF.
2) I could really do with a bit more info about the Compressor and Drive FX: there are só many parameters to program. For instance, does the Compressor use other instrument’s volumes, or only the volume produced by the instrument it self? And why does Drive contain so many more parameters than Distortion and Overdrive?
3) Could a future OS perhaps include áll of the Master FX to be used as Inst FX as well? I would love to be able to use Distortion and Overdrive on ány patch, not just because these FX have less parameters than the overly complex Drive (see 2).
4) Could a future OS enable nudging of single notes?

Cheers,
Rob
