Most underrated synths...

Accommodating Tony's request.

Right peeps, kick off with the synths you feel are most underrated.

I'll start with a couple of my favourites:

Roland SH3a...
Moog Prodigy
Cheetah MS6
Korg DW8000

I'll chill now otherwise this thread could go into volumes...

Kawai K1 :headbang: 90% unusable sounds.....but 10% pure gold. Often thought of reinvesting for three sounds I used back in the early 90s on everything the band I was in at the time played.

Roland SH-09. My first proper synth, secretly wanted a micromoog but was v happy when Santa dropped in with this. Spent hours recreating the patch lists for sounds I’d never use again. Memories. Came with a proper manual that I had until the last house move long after the synth went.

I had the K1, 4 and 5. All were good although I really liked the 4.

I even had the Kawai K5000s. Mind you, I always fancied the W.

SH09 was very underrated. I used it on a couple of tracks I programmed for a band or two in dem days.

Yamaha SY85.

Often discounted for being a '90s rompler (which it was) and not having FM like the SY77 and the SY99 but has enormous sound, is built like a tank, equipped with numerous great FX, a couple of wonderful digital filters and bursting with personality.

SH09 was my very first proper synth too. Absolutely loved it while secretly hankering for an SH2... but I flogged it in the mid 90s and still miss it.

I got fed up with the captive mains cable, though, and modified mine with an IEC mains inlet. Much better.

I have a K1r back in my studio on long-term loan and it is earning its keep. Add it like salt to more capable synths and the result is truly wonderful.

SH-09 - yes! Everyone seems obsessed with the SH-101 - the 09 is very similar, but sounds sooooo much better!

I will add:
ARP Pro Soloist
Teisco S100P
Reface CP, YC
JX-8P (baffles me why the 3P seems to get all the press).

Ugh! :headbang:

There's a good free K1 plugin now you can use for those things (PC only currently).

SH-101 with tubbutec upgrade > SH-09... No noise generator on the 09?

I'll add the Yamaha DX27.

Ssshhhh! Don't let everyone know! My S-100P has seen off much more illustrious competition in the monosynth field, and is something of a staple for me. Fab and bonkers.

Ensoniq Mirage, for what it's worth, and the TX-81z. Neither are going to blow minds, but there's something to be said for a sampler that has CEM filters and is more or less a glorified/lowfi-ified 2-osc synth. The TX aliases like anything but you can layer 8 bass sounds.

Korg Lambda doesn't get much mention either. Good stringer though.

Ah well if we're including samplers then my Emaxes are pure flames as the youth say.

Korg Lambda

Yep, lovely strings and choral.. got some samples for the Kronos and use them lots.

Ensoniq Mirage
oh yes! Remember seeing one in Calsbro in Sheffield. The sales tech (good bloke named Steve IIRC), played me some of the stock sounds and I was quite literally dumbfounded. Couldn’t afford one so managed to blag an afternoon annoying the shop as I recreated all Wakemans orchestral overtures. Happy days.
