trying to do bass with a jx8p-getting weird gratey distortion over top

Postby slightly » Mon Oct 19, 2020 6:44 pm

went to a jx8p I have today, to try some bass, was happy with the bass I was getting but theres a weird gratey distortion coming out with bass.

Ive uploaded a sample in the following link.

anyone know why this is happening, what could be causing the issue? to me it sounds like an envelope type thing, like wwhen you slow an attack sometimes to get rif d of the click, but thats not the case here has a weird flange type quality... I was thinking it was maybe the shortish release of the envelope maybe something is bad inside

is this a common type issue with jx8p??

I don't really hear what you're hearing, gratey distortion or flanging.

If you're talking about the attack sounding a bit "clippy" / distorted, check the levels on the attack phase, and check the filter settings, both envelope attacks and velocity sensitivity - the various attack settings might be producing high levels or fast changes resulting in internal clipping or clicks or other distortion etc.

If you can make it go away by reducing the attacks, or damping the envelope velocity or filter envelope amount, or the filter settings., then you have your answer... if not - then I don't know what you're referring to.

I hear no distortion. I wonder if it's something in your monitoring system that you're hearing.

Sounds cleaner than mine! I have to be careful with the output volume slider as it can run into distortion with fuller sounds like low mid pads.

FWIW I couldn't discern any noticeable issue with your demo either. On clean filtered bass sounds I can hear digital zippering from the envelopes on mine.

Now that you've described the issue it is easy to hear. Sounds like something happening when you release the note - an envelope setting in the filter perhaps?

Maybe you're just focussing on the envelope click. The JX-8P is not exactly snappy in the envelope department, but at bass frequencies you can get a bit of a 'click'.

If this is the case then I could tell you you'll never hear it in the mix, but if it's bothering you then you might. I know envelope clicks do bother some people (not me). If this *is* the case then all you can do is add a bit of attack/release until you find something you like. Personally I'd leave well alone.

It's frequency-dependent: note how the higher notes don't have much at all, and the lowest note in that sequence repeatedly has it most noticeably.

You could prob fiddle w envelope key tracking etc but, really, you've got bigger fish to fry, surely....
