Real-time Granular FX (alternatives to Portal)?

Postby emptybe » Sun Nov 15, 2020 11:50 am

Hi all, I am really enjoying getting into using Output's Portal granular effect on lots of things but would like to explore some alternatives as well. Most other granular fx I've found so far require you to load a sound or loop or whatever into it to then manipulate. But what I love is just using it as a plugin on stuff I'm playing in real time and playing off it.

Can any recommend a plugin that can do that?

I'm not familiar with Portal, but I have Grainspace :

which can do some fairly twisted things to sounds as it goes along. Is that the sort of thing you are looking for?

I’ve been having fun with Granite for awhile. There is even an SOS review.
I haven’t tried importing my own samples.

Thanks for the replies. I have Grainspace and it does amazing big paddy noises but doesn't seem to do much of the weird re-arranging that I love in Portal.

Granite needs you to load samples in rather than play through as an effect.

Thanks for reminding me MFG - I wrote that review, and it's about time I revisited Granite myself, as I was impressed:

Martin - recently there has been an upgrade to Granite. I haven’t had a chance to have a good play with it yet.

Yep, I upgraded Granite to v1.6801 the day I received the email about it, but like you I haven't got around to spending time with it yet.
