Poly Aftertouch to Channel Aftertouch in Cubase

Postby The Elf » Sat Feb 20, 2021 12:14 pm

I had a need to convert Polyphonic Aftertouch to Channel Aftertouch, so I rustled up a MIDI Transformer preset in Cubase. It's not super-clever, so you can fox it by pressing more than one note and juggling the aftertouch with your fingers, but it suffices for basic playing. I just needed it for monosynth lines.

Thought I'd share it in case anyone else ever needs to do the same:

I take it this was a pre-recorded track as I guess you know that the S2 (which is what I assume created the track) can do channel aftertouch if selected in "perf. track", the 3rd page iirc.
It's nice that you can have both forms of aftertouch at once when layering/splitting the keyboard.

What's 'S2'?

This just works to transform Poly AT (e.g. from my Elka MK76 or Hydrasynth) to channel AT without having to do anything on the keyboards themselves. I just add the Transformer preset to any receiver that needs it and job done.

I would guess DGL is referring to a GeneralMusic (GEM) S2.

DGL, it is one of, but not the only keyboard to feature poly aftertouch.

Well at the risk of being accused of simplifying this post, I'd just like to say thanks to The Elf for his handy tip.

I still use MIDIOX to massage/merge incoming MIDI data from my various controller keyboards, but as that has a very similar Data Mapping function I could adapt this screenshot for my own non-Cubase purposes.

It's a bad idea to simplify anything that can be made unnecessarily complicated. But 'here, here', it was good of Elf to share.

Thanks Martin, I didn't know that. so just had a look. Things like KeyAft > ChanAft, or CC to Sysex all possible... interesting. Or SongPositionPointer to PitchBend - wow - now that sounds unnecessarily complicated!
