Dave Smith gurus: your assistance is requested!

Postby Ben Asaro » Sat Mar 06, 2021 8:06 pm

I have been trying to create a simple pluck sound for my DSI MOPHO and am having a devil of a time. Any assistance would be appreciated!

The problem I am having is this: I can shape the sound easily enough but if I am using a sequencer that keeps the gate open for the length of the step (like the KeyStep), the note keeps playing on the length of the step and makes the sequence play legato.

I had no issue with my JP-08, just the MOPHO. Is there a way to get the MOPHO to ignore the gate length?

If this helps, the MOPHO uses the same programming architecture are the Prophet 08.

I must say, the menu navigation for the MOPHO totally sucks and even when using Patchbase the actual architecture of the synth isn’t clear. Compared to a knob per function synth or modular, the menu is infuriating. I sense another deep dive coming soon but in the interim, if someone could steer me in the proper direction I’d much obliged. Thanks!

Just to ask the obvious : you have the sustain in the envelopes set to 0 (or very low) - yes?

I can probably dig out the Tetra and have a play with the editing software...

Yup, I sure do!

Imgur is having an issue today so I can't link to the image, but here's the post I made with a screen shot of my settings.

But even if the sustain for both EGs is set to zero, if you press a key, the gate will keep it open. I tried applying negative envelope to the filter to see if I could do it that way, but it doesn't really produce a nice pluck that way.

Never mind, Dave, I got it.

You were right! Both EGs need to have a sustain of 0, unlike my other synths which can have some sustain on the filter. Thanks!!! :D

(Adding the MOPHO to my ever-growing list of deep dives ... )

Set glide to 0.

Glide is based on note state (on/off) and not on envelopes.

If you need glide then the only way is to shorten the notes.

Edit: just saw your post, maybe I misunderstand something!

Thanks, Bob! The glide is at 0. It turns out that the EGs in the MOPHO are super sensitive, so that even a difference between 0 and 1 can make the difference between something sound great or pants!
