Coloured knobs for Roland System-8?

Postby The Elf » Sat Apr 24, 2021 2:41 pm

I've seen a couple of people with replacement coloured knobs and fader caps for the Roland System-8 and I really would find these useful.

I've checked over at Roland and I can see no sign of them.

Anyone know how I can get hold of them?

This may not help in your particular instance because you would have to trim to fit fader caps but I've got these stuck all over the place in the studio. Sticky enough not to fall off but easily removable if necessary ... https://www.whsmith.co.uk/products/whsm ... 23294.html Pretty useless if you're tripping.

Thanks, mate.

Nice enough, but I know Roland made these knobs and caps specifically for the System-8. I just can't find where to buy them!

No idea if these fit your System 8, but Thonk do a good range of different coloured knobs for keyboards and the like:

Thanks, Hugh.

They do look similar.

I do know that Roland had these replacement knobs and caps, and unless they are truly bespoke for the S8 there must be others out there somewhere. If all else fails I'll ask Thonk.

I’m curious - is that to help distinguish the sections more easily or to have clearer pointers to show the edited parameter values?

The former.

I get all my knobs from Thonk, and immediately change any standard knobs on all my stuff for my own shapes and colours, the reason being I'm half blind and can’t see what I’m doing most of the time! Thonk are great, run by a couple of very nice chaps.

That’s interesting. The System-8 strikes me as being one of the more clearly-labelled and organised synths out there, but you presumably want to highlight the sections to make editing more intuitive. It will be really interesting to see the result - I hope you will share a photo in due course.

I'm happy to share a photo if I ever get them!

I'm told that Roland were selling packs of replacements at some time, but I missed out on it, and nobody seems to know anything about it now.

Sigh... :(

My alternative is coloured tape to denote the sections, which I may resort to.

Maybe, but I haven't a clue as to what I'd need to buy.
