ADK 51s 2nd hand find...

Postby Humble Bee » Wed Dec 12, 2018 11:41 am

I picked up an ADK51s LDC mic this morning at a flee market. Chf 15...

Does anyone know about these mics or use them?

The elastic for the shock mount is gone. Is there any good easy to find elastics that one could DIY in there to make it work?

It's working and looks clean but has probably been sitting in the box for a good while.

Is there any thing one can do to clean or service it (or any LDC) a bit to make it as good as it can be?

Any tips greatly appreciated!

Will record some at rehearsals this weekend to see how it sounds and works...

I don't think we've reviewed that particular model, but there are reviews on the site of several other ADKs. My general impression is that they tend to lay on the vintage valve coloration a bit thickly, but that can be a nice effect now and again!

If you take the original elastic loops to a haberdashery shop they might be able to find a suitable replacement -- or search online for that or industrial O-rings of the right length.

If it sounds alright, it is alright, so just use it. If it doesn't sound alright it's going to need specialist attention...

Some technical detail here (if I've got the right model) http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/ADK/S-51

And I'd suggest getting a Rycote InVision USM shock mount for it (if you haven't already got one). It's going to cost more than the mic did though!

Thank you Hugh and Wonks!

If it works I might have struck a good deal at £12...

If it works and sounds as it should that is...

And those Rycote shock mounts are nice and I really should get one...

You should. They actually work, for a start, which is more than can be said for most generic Chinese cat's-cradle mounts... and being universal, the Rycote will work with any other mic you might own now or in the future, so it is a worthy investment.

Ok...

So I found some really good elastic cord at the general supplier with aluminium bits to lock the two ends together with some pliers and it works a treat.

Not only that, but the mic sounds really good. Mono drum overhead, acoustic guitar and vocals all sounded great.

I clearly like my Aston Spirit on my voice better but it’s a draw on acoustic guitar. I think it will stay on drum kit mono overhead at rehearsals feeding the IEM for now replacing a SE Electronics ribbon.

Should go to the flee market more often...

Cheers!

Finally taking this recording lark seriously (and recording my Gypsy Jazz CD)........

Now that I've tested the mic in a studio recording situation as apposed to the initial test in the reversal room (loud and noisy) I have found that it has a low level crackling noice that became apparent when recording a quietly played acoustic guitar with the preamp gain pushed a bit. :(

Is it possible or even worth to get one of those checked and repaired?

I kind of like the tone of the thing but now that i have heard the crackling I hear it even when recording normally loud sources (my voice f.ex).

And it obviously gets louder when I start to compress things in the DAW...

Cheers!

In another thread it was mentioned that the crackling can be caused by condensation on the diaphragm or a failing capsule. The former can usually be cured by leaving the mic in a dry warm environment for a few days so that would be the first thing to try.

As Humble Bee has had it for 5 days, it should have dried out well enough by now.

There are a couple of switches on it, so it might pay to see if you can quirt some contact cleaner in them in case it's a dirty contact (though you'll need to prevent any spray from reaching the diaphragm, so some masking will be required). Might as well clean the XLR contacts as well.

It will also be worth taking apart and having a look inside, in case there are any obvious looking dry joints or bulging electrolytic capacitors, but beyond a simple item replacement (hard to do with SMD components) or re-solder a dry joint (remembering it will be lead-free solder), it's probably not cost-effective trying to get it repaired.

Thanks for the pointers here.

I have sprayed the switches with contact cleaner but that didn’t change anything.

As I am useless with electronics and soldering a friend will have a look at the circuit and see if there are any issues with solder joints or components.

I sent a mail to ADK to ask if they have any service place in Europe...

If it turns out to be the capsule I might get one from Mic-Parts eventually. And upgrade it at the same time.

But for now it can stay on mono OH duty in the rehearsal room. There the crackling is not audible.

Thanks again,

I don't know whether your rehearsal room is heated and dry but many over here are not. If the temp drops enough overnight that could cause condensation on the diaphragm. Forgive me for repeating this if you have addressed it but if you haven't.......

Having endured many a damp, cold and gloomy rehearsal rooms in my days I know what you mean...

This particular one is exceptionally good though with heating and adequate ventilation 24/7.

You lucky people

I guess the mic may well need some attention then :( I just didn't want you to spend money before trying the potential free fix (which I have done a few times over the years)

I will get it checked and any dodgy solder joints redone after Christmas. It might just fix it.

microphone-parts.com have a replacement capsule for $159 (RK47) that would be a lot better than the stock capsule. I think I might go for that one should the capsule need replacing. A bit steep though...

No answer from ADK yet. See what they say.
