Replacement gain Knob for Sytek MPX4A preamp?

Postby Iwan Morgan » Tue Feb 12, 2019 2:16 pm

Hi all,

This may be a long shot but I'm wondering if anyone knows where I could source a gain pot/knob for my sytek mpx4a preamp? One has gone missing in transit from a location gig.

I have emailed sytek but haven't had a reply at this point. I'm not sure if it is a bespoke part or if they are readily available from an audio component shop/website?

I don't do any repairs usually on gear so I don't really know where to look to find one, any help would be greatly appreciated as I would like the preamp to look as good as it sounds again. I am in the UK but don't mind ordering from anywhere if it's the correct part.

I'm not sure how to attach images here, but the pot is visible in the first picture on this page:

Thank you,

Iwan

I don't know which side of the Atlantic you're on, but replacement control knobs are readily available in myriad shapes, colours, sizes and fittings.

The important thing you'll need to know is the diameter and shape of the shaft the knob fits onto, as different replacement knobs have different size mounting holes and fitting arrangements.

In the UK, CPC have a good range of options, but there are numerous other suppliers:

Is it a push-on knob (in which case it will have a round or splined shaft), or one with a grub screw (when the shaft will have a flat side to it, and a fat D profile)? You'll need to know that and the shaft size (though 6mm is pretty standard), before you can select a suitable knob. Just because it looks similar doesn't mean it will fit.

You should certainly be able to find a knob that fits, though you may not find one that exactly matches the existing knobs. So you have the option of replacing all 4 knobs so that there isn't an odd looking one.

Hi all,
Thank you all for being so helpful. I am in the UK and I have found some similar profile/dimension knobs on CPC.

The shaft is rounded but I believe the knobs had a grub screw at one point, as there is a mark on the shaft that has lost its knob, and the 3 remaining knobs have a hole, although there doesn't appear to be any of the screws remaining.

The first image shows the knob:

This shows the shaft with the mark:

I feel like I should be able to remove the knobs as I don't see any screws but they seem to be stuck. Do you have any tips on removing such things?

Thanks

Iwan

Grubs screws are often Allen-headed (hex) types and can sometimes be quite far down into the hole so difficult to see -- but your second picture appears to show an Allen-headed bolt's socket. So try first with a range of small Allen keys of different sizes -- you'll know when you've found the right size by feel alone.

Older gear might use slotted grub screws, so you'll need a small flat-blade jeweller's style screwdriver for them.... but I think yours are hex (Allen) bolts.

Thanks for the tip Hugh, you are quite right. I've just managed to remove one with an allen key which should make it much easier to measure and order a replacement.

Thanks again,

Iwan

I needed to replace some knobs on my Sytek MPX4Aii preamp & received the following info from Stoica of Sytek a couple of years ago:

Supplier: Mouser Electronics, Mansfield TX USA (http://www.mouser.com)

part# 450-7005

description: Eagle knobs, black aluminum, 0.75" diameter.

These are the exact Sytek replacement knobs, Hope this helps.

Here's a direct link to the relevant mouser UK site page:
