I'm responding to lockdown by purchasing more tools that I won't use very often. The latest is a tap and die set and while researching threads I found this...

Probably more than most people need to know.

My next step is to decide which new drill sizes I should buy (beyond 0.5mm steps).

While you are at it get a can of proper thread cutting lubricant. RS Comps used to do it and it was vastly superior to 3in1 or WD-40 in that it seemed to make the tap sharper!

If you are really into fancy, one-in-a-years use tools get some Cobalt (gunsmiths) drills.

If you mean is a ¼" nut/bolt interchangeable with a 6mm the answer is no, not with any reliability but there are 4 comonnly used ¼" threads, BSF, BSW, UNF and UNC and two metric 6 x 1mm and 6 x .75mm.

I've downloaded that doc BTW, very interesting and useful.

Ooo! I was once told by an old tool maker that the BA was the strongest thread there is but I guess metric fine has overtaken that accolade?

Always weird I thought that electronic kit in UK used mainly 4 and 6 BA whereas on the continent we thought they used 5 and 3BA because the spinners fitted!

+1 to this. There are different thread cutting lubricants but one that's a little too popular with some folks is a bright red colour and comes packaged in people.

Happy to announce that my workshop (and lathe turning) escapades have, so far, not resulted in the liberation of any biological lubricant. I don't foresee the situation lasting long but I live in hope :D

I have taken the hint and ordered some paste, given how many HSS drills I have overheated in the past this should be a good thing.

As for Health and Safety, I'm worried more by soldering irons.
