Soundcube buzzing, broken?

Postby Bartman101 » Tue May 26, 2020 7:48 pm

I bought a brand new avantone soundcube recently.
It's plugged into a mackie big knob which selects between a pair of yamaha monitors or the single soundcube.
When selecting the yams the soundcube produces a nasty hum, even without the volume turned up all the way and the groundlift engaged
When selected on the mackie big knob or connected directly to my focusrite 18i8 the Avantone produces no buzz at all, unless I disengage the groundlift.
I tried different cables.
All devices in my studio are on the same power line of my house.
The power suply heats up pretty hot as well.

Am I creating ground loops or is the avatone broken?

let me know what you think!

sincerely yours

Hi Bart, and welcome to the SOS Forums! 8-)

It sounds to me from your description that the Avantone's are working perfectly well by themselves, but not once connected to your other gear, which is a classic description of a ground loop problem. However, ground loops can be notoriously difficult to diagnose unless you're systematic about tracking down the culprit(s), so please try to follow this step-by-step guide that I wrote some time ago.

Once you've done this and can report back with your findings it should be relatively easy to explain how to deal with this hum, whether by using a different audio cable or ground loop isolator.

I suspect this will need to be done between the Mackie Big Knob and the Yamaha monitors, but it's difficult to confirm until you've done these tests.

Hi Martin

Going through all cables and trying to find the source I discovered one

faulty wiring that caused all the trouble. I replaced all the wiring and everything cleared up nicely.

The buzz coming from the Avatone is still audible but manegable, probably just monitors and power supplies humming.

thank you for the great advice!
sincerely yours and stay healthy!

Hi again Bart!

That's excellent news - if only more queries were solved so easily ;)
