How to best record noise from next door & advice on soundproofing a bedroom wall.

Postby reyaaz » Mon Sep 07, 2020 12:52 pm

Hello all.

Some advice please.
We live in a new build with our bedroom wall adjoining the neighbour's kitchen/living room area, which extends on to their roof terrace.

The bedroom becomes unusable, due to the noise from the next door flat - a place which is used as an Airbnb flat for short stays.

It's a plasterboard stud wall, filled with rockwool, but any noise or music next door, can be heard as if they are in our home.

==
What's the best way of recording the sound with a mobile phone? As it doesn't seem to pick up much when I try to record a sample for our local Noise Pollution team.
Suggestions for positioning of the phone etc.

From my understanding, under Building Regulations Approved Document E, the landlord requires sound insulation testing if they are:
-Building a block or blocks of flats
-Building a hotel, hostel or house of multiple occupancy
-Building terraced or semi-detached houses
-Converting a building whereby you create more dwellings than previously existed, (which applies to our home).

Despite frequently requesting a copy from the landlord, I am still waiting for the Report and the Sound Insulation Certificate, that should have been obtained under Building Regulations Approved Document E, by January 2019.

Is this the correct path, for a tenant?

==
Also, what's the best way to further soundproof the wall?

Thanks and stay safe.

These issues pop out from time to time and unfortunately there's no easy fix.

If you are a tenant the only solution is to move. Any effective soundproofiing is going to involve structural alterations.

If you aren't too worried about your relationship with the landlord you could always try contacting your local authority to see if they have the relevant building regulations documents.

If it is a problem with airbnb lets could you report it directly to them?

Moving is not an option. Plus rogue landlord and leaseholder.
Local council are already involved but are asking for hard evidence.
I will ask the council directly, regarding the documents.

Aye. To be carried out at the appropriate time.
