This morning, I ordered all of the parts for my new studio desk. As I am now working from home, my desk doubles up as my daily office desk (Nothing to do with music) so needed a space that can be much more easy to keep tidy. My current solution is a kitchen surface off cut laid over two bedside cabinets. With all the rack gear on the floor at my knees and wires every where.
Not finding exactly what I was looking for available to buy, I decided to design my own. It design is based on a commercially available desk, but tweaked to my needs and some extra special features added!. The whole thing is made from 2 off 8'x4' sheets of 24mm Birch ply, but the shapes for some components are quite complex, so I have found a timber company with a CNC router who will cut the parts with extreme accuracy. The pictures below are renders from the CAD package.
The idea is that the rear panel will be hinged at the bottom and held closed with cupboard magnets at the top. It will fold down to allow access for cable routing. The channels running down the two inner legs will have brush seals in them for cables running out to the computer and other gear.
Can't say it is necessarily cheaper than buying a commercial, but it is equivalently priced and EXACTLY what I need!
As they were quite small files I've added your images directly inline as forum post attachments but we don't do this too often to avoid additional server overhead. Normally, you need to host your images somewhere where the actual image (.jpg, .png or whatever) can be directly linked to. Imgur.com works well for this. -- ED

I don't think PNG format is supported. When I get a minute, I'll convert to JPG

Oh dear, I shot to this post at lightning speed, as I thought you were designing a "studio desk" along the lines of a "mixing desk" I’m severely disappointed now, that I can’t get involved in this one.

Very nice. A bit like the Output one but with additional use of the leg space.
Looking forward to seeing it come together.

It's very satisfying once it's complete. The design looks really tidy, nice work.

Yes, the Output one was the inspiration, but it had nowhere for a computer, hence the shelves in the legs. and also I wanted 4U of rack space - The output one only has 3U. I think the Outlook rack space is vertically mounted despite the angled sides IIRC. I wanted the angled rack space. Inside there are some 'goodies' for cable management, but I'll put some proper photos up when I build it.

All I need now is a 'studio' big enough to put one in

Yes. I am that Linux nut.
Onwards and... err... sideways!

Wow - that's some well impressive CAD work Moroccomoose!
Like the others here, I'm looking forward to seeing how it translates to the real world, and some photos of same.

Re: Bespoke studio desk design
So parts are starting to arrive. I have rack rails, power distribution and drawer runners
The woodwork is arriving on Thursday.
Just for some context, here is the current setup...as you can see its a mess. Really looking forward to getting the rack stuff off the ground and the keyboard set up permanently on the slide.
When finished, I'll have a work area that is the same size as my current desk but with no equipment on it!
Fixed the 'fix' of the image links; they are now inline -- ED

Re: Bespoke studio desk design
I actually spent a couple of hours round the back of my desk with some cable tidy stuff a couple of weeks ago.
It just feels better when stuff is tidy.

Still taking this recording lark seriously (and trying to record my Gypsy Jazz CD)........

Absolutely, it's really useful for problem solving if/when anything does happen to go wrong as well. I actually spent the majority of Saturday ruthlessly organising and labelling my cables/racks.

Indeed. When I first put this together (only a few weeks ago) it was quite tidy. It doesn't take long to turn into a mess. Especially when your feet are in amongst all the cables!
