Hi all

I am looking to make some new panels but the local place I buy from has no Rockwool. I am wondering about getting earthwool as they have that there.

Anybody have experience with it?

I never even heard of it before, but on looking it up the major difference seems to the binder which is not made from petroleum. The claim is it doesn’t have toxic offgassing. I’ll be interested in seeing replies to your question. On first glance, it looks like a viable alternative.

Earthwool is Rocksil's equivalent to Rockwool panels. I've used RS60 throughout my studio and it is very similar (possibly identical) to the Rockwool RW3 that I've used for other projects.

Mineral wool is what it is, Rockwool is a trade name for the company's product. What matters most for the DIY building of acoustic treatment is the density and rigidity of the batts. Rockwool RW3 is 60kg/m3 and rigid enough to be self supporting in a ceiling panel so has been recommended by our, retired, resident professional studio designer as the best compromise. If the Rocksil product has similar characteristics it will perform in much the same way. TBH I wouldn't get too much into the minutia of the materials unless you have employed an acoustic consultant. As long as what you use in a DIY installation is in the ballpark you should get acceptable results. A major factor in my choice of RW3 and Camira fabric was the fact that both had properties that made building professional looking panels with the minimum of skill reasonably easy.

I didn't go into the differences between it and Rockwool when I bought it - it just happened to be cheaper and more easily available. They had just changed the branding from Rocksil to Knauf at the time I bought it.

Some of the places around here stock the Knauf stuff rather than Rockwool.

As Sam says the density is the important bit, a few different companies have products that will do the job, Rockwool just happens to be one of the more popular ones.

Earthwool is a term used by Knauf. That and 'Ecose' are names intended to convey a clean non toxic ethos. That very much seems to be the case. The stuff doesn't smell or itch. Acoustically it is equal to other fibres. Ecose and Caruso Isobond have really made life a lot nicer.
