Dua Lipa "New Rules" - what is happening?
I wonder if anyone can explain to me what happens rhythmically or technically before the main chorus of Dua Lipa "New Rules" comes in? has there been a time signature change? I can't work out how they have done that really interesting rhythmic change just before the chorus starts each time.

It’s just a dropped first beat with a fill. It gives the impression of a more complex rhythmic device - especially coupled with the unaccompanied bar of vocal directly preceding it - but the time signature doesn’t change. The groove is therefore briefly shifted by one beat which is a nice hook.

One, don't pick up the phone / You know he's only calling 'cause he's drunk and alone
Two, don't let him in / You'll have to kick him out again
Three, don't be his friend / You know you're gonna wake up in his bed in the morning
And if you're under him / You ain't getting over him
I've got new rules, I count 'em
