Hi guys and thanks for clicking

It's been a weird year of downtime for me, but I feel I've made some progress in my composition skills and in developing my own style. I've been working for this film trailer music company for a while, but really I've been honing my skills and I haven't sent them anything in a long time as I wanted to get better. This is part of a 4/5 track EP I'm hoping to deliver to them soon.

I wondered what people make of the arrangement. I know it's very simple, but the company loves that sort of stuff. I've also been told to make my work sound less like a bombastic piece of music for a trailer and more like a film soundtrack.

I've tried to not use many plug-ins other than EQ, and I've done a rough mix at -10dB, so I apologise for the quietness. I collaborate with a producer in Bristol who will do a mix once the arrangement is finalised.

Sounds good to me but a couple of comments...

I didn't like the gaps in the bass about a third of the way in, and then felt that the bass line could be more exciting with some more rhythmic interest rather than mostly held notes. It could have some chugging quavers sometimes or somesuch.

The parts have little obvious independence so it starts to sound like layers building up and becomes a bit uninteresting after a while. Something extra seems a good idea, with a quite different rhythm and melodic shape.

As it is it could be just what someone wants, but to me it sounds 80% there.

Pinch of salt required. It's just an opinion.

I'll take care of those pesky bass notes. There are half notes on bass and cello towards the back, but I think they're a lil buried in the mix. I'll try getting them to punch through the mix a bit more, and experiment with chugging quarters.

Ya know I had a listen again this morning with fresh ears and you're totally right. There's definitely a melody to be had over the top of those layers so I will have a play around. Time to find that extra 20%!

To be more precise, in case it seems useful, it's at about 1:35 that I start to hear the parts following each other around. The top strings fall with the main tune and (ahem) Bach wouldn't have done this. He'd give the strings a different shape. Contrary motion and all that. It could be just a one-note change. There aren't any rules but this is where I would have liked to hear a distinct string line over the low strings/brass. The top strings could go up where they currently go down if I haven't mis-remembered, so that it sounds more composed and less formulaic. But then you may not want to do this. It's all a matter of taste in the end.

I think you nailed it with the more-soundtrack-less-trailer type sound. At least in the beginning. Then around the midpoint it does devolve into that adrenaline rushing, trailer, battle-scene-montage type of music that we all know and love. Any time you have that up-tempo beat with the soaring violins, one can't help but think of trailers.

But it was a very good trailer.
