Name that tune... can anyone recognise these piano chops?

Arrangement, instrumentation, lyric writing, music theory, inspiration… it’s all here.

Hmm, well, see what you can find!
I'm still sure there is some 70s tune that pinches it wholesale!
But so far we've all basically drawn a complete blank.

I thought 'Jessica' too but then I thought it was more similar to the piano intro to 'Ozark' by Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays.

Yaaassss!
Mr Dooby Doo, thank you! I'm pretty sure that must be it. It's not *exactly* the same riff, but it's damn close. And moreover it has the same kinda structural function in the song as Fauré's riff.
I don't own a single Billy Joel album, but it is quite plausible that I heard this tune on some BBC4 docu or clip show in the past few years.

If it's not that then you're not going to get much closer ;)

I pretty sure it must be.
I mean, they're in the same key and everything.
Also, I remember reading an interview with Billy Joel years ago where he said he was always getting grief from his piano teacher, cos he'd get set pieces to play, and rather than learn them properly off the sheet music, he'd find them on vinyl then work them out by ear, fairly closely but never note perfect.

Ha! I used to get similar grief from my cello teacher when I briefly had lessons. Still can't read music :(
