I can't figure out this synth lead

Postby mikemike1191 » Sat May 04, 2019 7:32 am

hey guys I know I'm new here, but I can't figure out the synth lead in this song. Whenever I play it on my keyboard it's almost like the notes sound to obvious he does something where he almost makes the melody sound so fluid like its barely rising in its pitch or notation. The closes I've gathered is that it's probably in C# minor or at least in that key. I can barely even tell what octave it's in.

If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.. I've tried almost everything I can think of. Here's the song. Skip to 5;41 to hear the lead.

Here it is played slowly:

I don't know how to tell if it's Dbm or C#m 'cos I'm thick. But let's say it's in Dbm, then I reckon the notes would be:

Db Fb Gb Db
Db Fb Gb Db
Db Fb Gb Cb Db Cb Db Cb
Db Fb Gb Db
Db Fb Gb Db
Db Fb Gb Fb Db Fb Db Fb

(I expect you're right and it would be better to write it in C#m but I dunno why. The fluidity comes from it having a small amount of portamento dialled into a mono patch so the notes glide across.)

+1

It's the portamento that gives it that distinctive character that you wouldn't be able to reproduce just playing notes alone.

Now I just gotta work on the wave forms and the effects, but honestly thanks for the help with the notes and glide. I thought I was using the glide before but I wasn't actually overlapping the notes so the pitch wasn't as fluid like you said

Also any other tips on the effects would be amazing. I've been obsessed with this least for years.

Some synths only generate portamento when you play legato notes (an annoying feature, IMHO), but a decent synth should let you lock portamento on. Some have both, so check the settings.

If you mean that lead sound, one thing I noticed is that the stereo panning is linked to keyboard tracking, moving further to one side as he plays up the keyboard...so when it glides between high and low notes, it also glides left and right.
