Which Amps Should I Get?

Postby mannyaalonso » Thu Aug 23, 2018 1:24 am

Hello,

Need advice on the type of amps to get the best sound possible out of 4 Seismic Audio CLA Compact line-array speakers.

Here is their specs, we have two on each side.
(Also please don’t just comment that the speakers suck lol)

POWER: 150 Watts RMS; 300 Watts Peak
FREQUENCY RESPONSE: 65Hz - 20kHz
SENSITIVITY: 97 dB
CROSSOVER FREQUENCY: 3kHz
MAXIMUM SPL: 125 dB
CONNECTORS:Two Speakon Connector Inputs
NOMINAL IMPEDANCE: 16 Ohms

I've found the Crown XLS power amps to be surprisingly good sounding and versatile.

Noticed those speakers are of 16 Ohms impedance. That is very unusual these days for general purpose speakers* outside the guitar amp industry.

The vast majority of amplifier specs will quote power output for a FOUR Ohm load and the power delivery will be much less into 16 (in theory a quarter of the 4R figure but more in practice because the internal supplies don't "droop" as much) .

To get the maximum 150W into those speakers you need to be looking at a 500W 4R spec or 250W for 8 Ohms.

*SO unusual that I would check it very carefully!

It takes no time at all to search for them Dave, and yes they are 16 ohms.

https://www.seismicaudiospeakers.com/pr ... ion-driver

But as 2x5" line array speakers they are really designed to be used in multiples and also in conjunction with the matching sub.

https://www.seismicaudiospeakers.com/pr ... 8411145032

Also, as the OP has a pair of the 2x5"s on each side, in parallel their load will be 8 ohms (which is why they are 16 ohm rated as 4 of them in a line array will give a 4 ohm load).

So the ideal power amp for the 2x5"s would be one which produced between 500-600W per side into 8 ohms,

If you plan to add more of those speakers into the array, then the same amp would be more than capable of providing more than double that power into the resulting 4 ohm load, so you might be better off with 500W a side into 8 ohms rather than 600W. The difference in sound output will only be very slightly less (by about 0.8dB).

Thanks for all the replies. Currently we were using a Behringer iNuke, which is supposedly rated at 3000watts or 1600watts/per side at 8ohms.

But we don’t know what’s happening because the left side sometimes just goes out. The knob turns red and the speaker goes out.

We’ve check that it’s not the amp because we switched the inputs and still the left speaker went out. But it doesn’t make sense why it’s happening.

We also tried a lower powered amp and the sound sounds distorted like if it’s not enough to handle all the instruments.

Suggestions?

Have you tried switching the outputs over to see if the other channel then does it? If so. it could be down to a speaker issue.

But they already knew they were 16 ohms and told you so. :headbang:

Switching inputs doesn't test the amp, it tests the source! But at least you now know that the source is fine! :-)

You need to switch the output cables from the amp to the speakers to work out whether the faulty stays with the amp channel or moves with the speaker.

We also tried a lower powered amp and the sound sounds distorted like if it’s not enough to handle all the instruments.

Impossible to say at this point. It could be a failing amp channel module, or it could be an intermittent speaker fault. Connect the left speaker to the right amp channel (and vice versa) and tell us whether the left or right speaker no cuts out!
