Midi over wifi.

Postby Sam Spoons » Fri Sep 21, 2018 7:33 pm

I'm back to investigating the Berry X-Touch Compact as a cost effective mixing surface for my X32 Rack and XR12 mixers. The tech appears to have matured sufficiently that the X-TouchC will control the mixers adequately over midi but I would like to be wire free if possible. Is there an reasonable priced wireless midi system that works peer to peer without the need for a computer?

There don't seem to be many about. I use a CME WIDI. There's also the Panda midiBeam.

I'd imagine you'd need full duplex MIDI, so the Panda looks to be out of the running for that application. And the WIDI-X8 is discontinued.

The Kenton wireless MIDI system is input only on the transmitter.

This seems to be the only bi-directional MIDI transmitter I can find, but it's not cheap. https://www.midijet.com/index.php/index ... ory&path=7

I wondered about that...could you do something with two of them...?

You'd have to have a transmitter and receiver pair at either end. It's going to get rather expensive and cumbersome.

Possible interference and latency could get 'interesting' too!

Yes, looking like a non starter this one. Plan B is to dig out an old Android tablet and use the XTC to control Mixing Station on that. Sadly the iPad app doesn't accept midi control (yet....) and we all know the difficulties of using third party devices with anything from the fruit :headbang:

Basically I'm trying to avoid the easy fix and just use a laptop and the XTC.

This might be a late in the day question to ask but what sort of wireless range are you looking for?

The reason I ask is that Bluetooth modules are inexpensive and can do exactly what you are after. The range is dependent on which type of Bluetooth is used (more range usually costs more).

There is a small amount of latency with Bluetooth (as there is with whiffy) which may be a concern?

(BTW this was nothing more than a desperate attempt to quote some more XTC titles.)

You slipped that one past us BJG :D

I would probably need more range than BT can manage and, latency is already a minor issue (actually it's more the apps being a bit sluggish rather than wifi latency which is pretty good compared to BT)
