This might be a late in the day question to ask but what sort of wireless range are you looking for?

The reason I ask is that Bluetooth modules are inexpensive and can do exactly what you are after. The range is dependent on which type of Bluetooth is used (more range usually costs more).

There is a small amount of latency with Bluetooth (as there is with whiffy) which may be a concern?

You slipped that one past us BJG :D

I would probably need more range than BT can manage and, latency is already a minor issue (actually it's more the apps being a bit sluggish rather than wifi latency which is pretty good compared to BT)

I just did a quick search for BT 5 modules which have 800 feet range. I have a feeling that the latency is lower than WiFi but will look into it. With BT 5 you get more range when you lower the bandwidth so I have a feeling that 800 feet is just the start.

Modules available here.

They have some longer range devices to go > 1kM :bouncy:

That was just the first one I found.

+1 for Bluetooth. Korg’s MIDI over Bluetooth is great, very solid and low latency.

Just found a reference, the BT 5 latency is <3ms which is about the same as Wifi (1-3ms) - depends on the number of users.

I was thinking of a hardware solution rather than something that runs on a laptop - MIDI connectors at each end, no wires in the middle.

I think I might make one just for fun :headbang:
