If you are using DXS15 subs then, yes, use the 'thru' for the tops. Turn the HPF to 'on' so that you aren't wasting energy on frequencies that the subs handle. I would probably set the FOH to 'on' as well as there is a slight top end lift. But that will be a personal preference thing so try it and see which you prefer.

12” Subs with 15” tops?

I’d suggest the other way around. Replace your DXR15s with 10s or 12s and get a single DXS15 sub for the time being. I had that exact setup (DXR12s over a single DXS15 sub) a couple of years ago and I would say that nothing new in that price range could beat it. It was quite a powerful, and great sounding compact rig.

Yup, putting a 12" sub (or two) under a 15" speaker is far from optimum, you may get a little more headroom from the tops but probably no more bass than without. I use 2 QSC K12s over a single EV15" sub and it works very well. Two DXS12's a DXS18 do not make.......

An 18" sub will give you more extension and free up a little extra headroom in the tops. If you like em then keep em, they are good speakers

All the name manufacturers make decent 18" subs, compare cost, max SPL and size, they won't vary much on size. A quick glance suggests the JBL EON 618S might be a contender https://www.thomann.de/gb/jbl_eon_618_s.htm but go and see if there's anything on a deal at your local shop.

I have DXR12s. When I’ve tried pairing them up with small (12” ) subs, or even bigger subs that weren’t up to it power wise, I’ve thought - why have we bothered?!!

The matching subs for the DXR15s are the DXS18s. There are other subs that would also do the job but they will be as big, as heavy and of a similar price to the Yamahas. Have a look at the specs and see if this is something that you could store, transport and set up.

'Cos it's good. It's considerably louder than the cheaper ones, probably sounds better too. It's also very heavy though.

FWIW this one is €3500 and is passive/un-powered https://www.jsfrance.com/en/caissons-de-basses-actifs-passifs/11603-l-acoustics-renfort-de-grave-passif-sb18-version-2-neuf-2100000126361.html

Being pragmatic, in most places I play the sub is just producing some extra thump but, even then some sound much more musical than others. Cheap subs usually sound very 'one note'.
