Which speaker? Ferrite refers to the magnet.

As Sam says, cheap subs tend to be very one-notey, so they thump loudly but everything sounds the same and the bass doesn't play tunes. They also generate a lot of harmonic distortion which tramples all over the sound the top units are putting out, making the system sound harsher and nastier than without the sub in place!

A good powerful sub is inherently an expensive thing, and you do get what you pay for.

If you are doing bigger venues then the usual suggestion is to hire for the first couple to;

a) get a feel for what is needed
b) limit the spend until you know what you need and have sufficient bigger bookings to make it financially viable.

If these bigger venues aren’t paying enough to cover the hire cost then either you are not charging enough or you are only getting the gigs because you are cheap.

Whether the DXS15 is good enough is something only you can decide when you have tried one in situ. But, the DXS18 will be better (i.e. louder and, probably, more musical) and the DXS mk2 better still, and two of them will be better again but if you get to the point that two DXS 18 mk2s are not enough your tops will be struggling big style too. Music Wolf's suggestion that you hire in for the big gigs makes a lot of sense, a couple of 18" subs shouldn't cost more than around £30 for a 24 hour hire.

You are going to run into all kinds of problems with different frequencies beaming unevenly unless the speakers are designed to be used in that way.
