Pulse and Samson Gear

Postby GRAHAM99 » Sun Feb 09, 2020 10:34 am

The band I am in needs to buy a PA.
We have been offered a Pulse PMX1604 powered mixer and a pair of Samon D15 speakers.
These are both used but look to be great value!!
Has anyone had experience of this gear?

Define 'great value'. I've not used these but I've googled them and this is all discontinued kit (most stuff these days would be passive desk / active cabs).

you've basically got a 16ch desk (8 mic pre's) and a couple of low end plastic box cabs. The cabs are 8ohm a piece so you'll be getting 300w per side rms.

What do you need to put through the PA? Given the limited power available it probably isn't going to be up to much more than vocals only. If that's what you want, the kit is dirt cheap and you're on a miniscule budget then it may be ok but, depending upon price, there may be other, better, options.

Thanks for that.
We did have the use of a better PA and we used to put a kick ,snare and overhead mic through and it sounded ok.
I take it this cheaper gear will only be good for vocals?

Speaker efficiency is only 95dB, (found the manual online, but strangely Samson themselves don't have it) so with 300W you'll get a maximum of 120dB (Samson actually quote 120dB for 400W, so it may be nearer 118dB in reality). Which is very low by current standards.

And for a 400W speaker, you'd really need 600W-800W RMS pc to get that peak power. 300W means you're more likely to push the power amp too hard and clip the output.

The setup would probably be OK for a singer/acoustic guitarist (but the heavy mixer amp would be overkil), but not for a full band.

I'd really look elsewhere.

The wrong product at a great price is still the wrong product...
