In 2025 Elf will be wearing these.

Heard enough horror stories of people being blinded by getting crap on contact lenses to not want to ever touch those!

Anyway, this is the real growth area in VR at the moment:

Yeah, me too but the Sweeney came first.

Well, really. That's like claiming that electric toasters are some futile sci-fi fantasy...

Tell you what, I'll bump this discussion in another five years and then you can admit how wrong you were. I'm patient. :D
 I'm happy to be proved wrong, but I've been promised flying cars since I was an 8 year old watching 'Tomorrow's World'. There was *always* a film of the prototype, but it never made it to my street...

The devil, my friend, is in the details. It's like being in 1980 and conclude that since cars aren't flying yet, it's not gonna be possible to have the internet.

On a scale of difficulty, VR is like 10, flying cars are like 100. There's lots of physics to get right for the latter (and then the regulation fun begins)... not so much for the former.

It's nowadays difficult for people at large: we're able to do some things that would have been pretty incredible just a few decades ago, and yet some other stay pretty incredible... without going into details, it's hard to know what's what.

Flying cars aren't coming anytime soon.

Actually it's just a matter of cost. All four of those look as if they are practical and usable (for a given value of 'practical and usable') just beyond d the reach of most of us.

But if you want a futuristic device that has become commonplace look at the Star Trek' communicator (or the one from Man From Uncle or many similar devices from fiction). Nearly everybody on the planet have on of those.....

I'm of the dubious around VR in live music generally.

One rare exception that caught my eye/ear recently is from Imogen Heap, who I rather admire. Her Tiny Desk session has a really interesting segment from 09:10 onwards where she discusses her glove controllers, what they can do, and then gives an interesting performance of Hide And Seek. While I'm not convinced that it's a gimmick that can be stretched much longer than a couple of numbers, it definitely produces some impressive results here.

I see JMJ has got something on this evening. Might take a look and see what these events are currently like.

Jean-Michel Jarre wrote:“Having performed concerts in extraordinary venues, virtual reality will now allow me to play in unimaginable spaces while remaining on a physical stage” says Jarre. “Virtual or augmented realities can be to the performing arts what the advent of cinema was to the theatre, an additional mode of expression made possible by new technologies at a given time.”

She's interesting...I think she's barking up the wrong tree with those mi.mu gloves though. £2500 a pair for a bit of smart fabric and a microcontroller is still ridiculous, even though they've halved the price since last year. You could probably do most of it with a Genki ring or a pair of GripBeats.

Did anyone see it...? I got into the venue in VR on an Oculus Rift; a bunch of people were standing around chatting in front of the stage, waiting for something to happen. A Canada goose had barged its way to the front.

Image

...then someone dragged me out for a bike ride and by the time I got back it was all over.

I wasn't that interested in socialising in an '80s videogame environment. When the surroundings in VRChat catch up with Half-Life Alyx it might be worth another visit.

I'm just looking at what looks like a catch-up here...
