Modern Surround Sound "bass" System for Garage?

Postby mikehende » Sun Nov 08, 2020 2:06 am

Hey guys, I would like to upgrade from old Sony surround system. Main issue in this small one car garage is the bass as I have cabinets, fridge, tool boxes, chairs e.t.c along the 3 walls.

Isn't there some option to get almost equal bass no matter where you sit? I am thinking of having the subs for bass on the walls instead of on the floor or may use 2 powered subs on the floor on opposite sides maybe, any thoughts?

Also, what is a good modern surround system which gives clean highs with which you can run and manipulate playlists from the phone and also bass and volume please?

IIRC your garage is brick built and as such will be more or less impossible to get even bass across the whole room. There will, at the resonant frequencies, be dead spots and places where those frequencies are reinforced. The only way to mitigate this is with extensive bass trapping and to make a significant difference the traps will need to be large and deep (at least 12" deep and, ideally a couple of feet or more.

I can't help with the surround question I'm afraid, not my area of expertise...

Yeah Sam, I know the room acoustics will not give me what I want, just grasping at straws.

I wonder how Cinema systems get away with bass regarding the seating?

Two subs will usually make the response less even rather than using just the one. There was a good article in the magazine a few years back that explained it really well with some good diagrams, it was focused on live sound but the principles are the same.

1, much bigger rooms.
2, a couple of hundred punters and seats acting as damping material.
3, big bass traps. Seriously big in some cases.
4, generally film subs are designed for impact rather than tunefulness. Explosions, dragon roars, collapsing buildings etc are all just about shifting air, rather than shifting air in tune.

A shed load of acoustic treatment, specifically including effective bass trapping built into the walls.

... But haven't we been around this several times loop before?

Whoa, didn't realize all of that. I was looking at "Home" Cinema systems, this one I can try whenever I get rich:

Right now looking at "screen array" but have no idea of it's ideal use?
