Hello,
Our handheld mic (AKG 227) fell apart today... no kidding, the basket came loose and the diaphragm is waving loosely.
I need to replace this, but I don't want to be dishonest. It's only useful for vocal/speaking applications, and to be clear, it wasn't particularly good at that either.
What is a comparable microphone, I'm guessing in the $50-$70 CDN range? I could just buy an SM58, but it's roughly double the cost. I know it's not my money, so why do I even care?
Many thanks,
Peter

I think £80@ is not an unreasonable cost for something that definitely won’t fall apart.

You can get a case with 3 of Behringers dynamic handhelds in for about £30 here, not sure what the prices are where you are but it could be worth a look. I can't remember the model name off the top of my head but they're perfectly funtional if you're not expecting too much of them. And if one does break you've got two spares.

I can recommend the AKG D5 as a good sounding, cheapish, robust mic.

Wonks and ef37a/Dave have tested and got surprisingly decent results with one of the Behringer 58 clones, user review here https://www.soundonsound.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=70540

Re: Cheap and Nasty handheld vocal microphone
You've not provided details about the types of voices or how it's to be used e.g. hand-held or on a stand.
Here's a quick list:
CAD$135 Sennheiser 835
CAD$120 Shure SM58.
CAD$80 Shure PGA58 or AKG P3S.
CAD$50 Shure SM48 or PGA48, but the handling noise is bad.
Try to stretch to the $80 if you can.
