I wanted a way to remotely control playback and record/stop functions in my DAW, which is Reaper by the way. Research pointed me towards the Logidy UMI3.
When recording, it breaks up my train of thought and flow to have to use a mouse to control these functions. I got it up and running using the downloaded software in about 5 minutes. I used midi CC's to control my DAW. It works great and is highly recommended.
It was $80 U.S. dollars, and the build quality is excellent.

I have one and it is useful. But you must remember that the foot controller does not output MIDI itself, but controls host software that outputs the MIDI Note Ons. The good side of this is the fact that host software is programmable and allows sequences of MIDI commands to be assigned to each button. The programs can be saved as presets.
