Indeed!

I've just written a post about your SOS archives on our Facebook page, and it seems to be getting a very warm reception!

Many thanks Des,

A few little bits of news to relay here:-

Happy to say that we can officially add International Musician, The Mix, Making Music, One Two Testing and Micro Music to our archiving and republishing efforts - which gives us permissions now for *all* of the publications in our initial remit, just in time for our second birthday next month...

Thanks to everyone that helped make this possible - Tony Horkins, Chris Kempster, Tony Bacon, Paul Colbert, Adrian Walker, Brian Giddings, and Darrin Williamson... I'll now be including all publications in the processing/publishing rotation.

We've also got some good new mag donors lined up who will be helping fill holes in our collection, so we should hopefully be able to complete scanning of at least The Mix, One Two Testing and Micro Music over the next few months...

I know I keep repeating myself here... but this is a fantastically good and very much appreciated resource. 'They' said it couldn't be done, but you have proved them comprehensively wrong. All power to your digital elbows! :D

Thanks Desmond. To name a TV series - Absolutely Fabulous!

I was browsing through the old H&SR and E&MM kits/projects over the weekend. Happy days, when I used to dream of building a delay or chorus unit. :geek:

Muzines is an astounding resource for the global music community.
Well done!

Happy Birthday to mu:zines - we reach the ripe old age of 2, today!

Blog: One... Two! Birthday time again!
http://www.muzines.co.uk/blog/one-two/24

I've also introduced a new feature - Ads!

No - not running advertising on the site - you can now search/filter for ads, both gear and vendor ads (eg "Soho Soundhouse").

This lets you run searches like:
- Show me all the Akai Sampler ads in the 80s
- Show me Yamaha Sequencer Ads
- Show me Akai MPC60 ads from Sound On Sound
- Show me Mixer ads
- Show me all "Keyboard Shop" adverts

To use this, go to the Gear + Ads page (http://www.muzines.co.uk/gear and flip the Ads menu to "Search Advertisements" and us the filter options exactly as for regular gear review searches.

Now, where's the cake..?

This is great -- I love looking at old adverts partly for the nostalgia and partly just to appreciate how far things have developed over the last 10/20/30/40 years.

Happy birthday Mu:zines!

Intrigued by your blog top ten articles, number 9:
9: Tascam MM1 (MT, 1989)
I honestly have no idea why this rackmount mixer review was so popular!

Hmmm, one came up recently on Gumtree and I thought “4 stereo ins, 12 mono ins, 4 Aux sends, very compact - just what I need for my analogue synths and separate outputs on my TR-626”. So naturally I googled it, and the MT review in Muzines came as the top result, as is right and proper.

As to why it might be a popular article, one possibility is that there is nothing like this keyboard mixer on the market at present, which is odd when you think about the resurgence in synth hardware, which brings with it the resurgence of that old problem - never enough Inputs! Gap in the market (not satisfied by the million clones of the venerable Mackie 1202) and maybe that’s why the old gear generates interest on Muzines.

I always thought that Muzines would be a huge asset to the second-hand market, and indeed it is.

The A&H Zed18 is a pretty close equivalent with 4 stereo and 10 mono inputs, 4 auxes. Possibly not quite as compact, but I bet it sounds better! :-)

Fair point, Hugh, it looks like a great mixer. As a hobbyist working in a tight space, the MM1 specs and £100 price tag (in great condition) swung it for me. My point was not so much about the mixer, as about the benefit of having access to that tradition of well-written reviews from the 80's -90's, when looking into this gear. Desmond's blog indicates the demand - we are so lucky to have this resource.

Sure, but there's regular traffic, and there's enough traffic to put an article up in the top ten (thousands of views) - which usually requires some sort of significant push - usually social media linking to an article. While writing this I had the real-time stats open, and there was another MM1 hit, and this was from South Africa. We get quite a bit of traffic on old gear from less developed parts of the world, where presumably a lot of this stuff is still being used.

Anyway, I was curious, as this has got a lot of traffic, and doesn't seem to have been the result of an obvious social media push - which is why it stood out...

I've just made our 200th issue active, and I'm happy to bring the first One Two Testing issue to mu:zines.

It's a mammoth "Synth Special" issue, featuring Depeche Mode, Heaven 17, Vince Clarke, Synth Special reviews (inc Yamaha CS01, CS70M, Korg MS10, MonoPoly, Polysix, Trident, Moog Rogue, Source, Roland JP8, SCI Pro 1 and Prophet 5, Oberheim OBXa and more), Computer Synths with Thomas Dolby and some other stuff.

Blogged about it here:

I particularly enjoyed the Korg MS10 review in the Nov 1982 issue ;)
