Hugh - do you know offhand what date AudioMedia started? Best I have at the moment is the early nineties.

Also, can't find much info on "Sound Pro" that you mentioned, if you can help, that would be great also... thanks!

That sounds about right - I seem to remember the first issue came out at the same time as that years APRS show and featured a Yamaha? digital mixing desk on the cover.

The first edition of SoundPro had an October 1997 cover date and was launched at the IBC show in September. There were five issues...

I'll be able to confirm the first AM edition this afternoon, but June 90 sounds about right to me too...

The first edition of Audio Media was launched in June 1990 at the annual APRS exhibition at Olympia, Kensington, London.

Being the founding Editor I should know this, but I can't lay my hands on my copies of AM... think it was a "June" cover date, and it featured a world-exclusive review of the Yamaha DMR8 digital recorder/mixer on the cover (reviewed by SOS Editorial Director Dave Lockwood).

Now that you have a dedicated Pro/Broadcast section you might consider adding 'LineUp' which was the journal of the Institute of Broadcast Sound (IBS) -- now renamed the Institute of Professional Sound (IPS) and was considered one of the best industry trade magazines for broadcast sound. It ran from February 1988 to July 2009. I presided over that magazines closure, too... :-(

There was also another short-lived broadcast-oriented sister magazine to Studio Sound in the late 80s called Broadcast Engineering (I think) -- I'll confirm the dates and title of that this afternoon too (I need to go down to my archives in my remote man-cave to check!)

Added, thanks!

Yes, I was aware of this one - info would be most useful, thanks Hugh.

Apologies -- typo on my part. LineUp started in 1988, not 98!

Man-cave checked!

The title of the Link-House broadcast magazine which ran alongside Studio Sound was BROADCAST SOUND (turns out broadcast engineering was an American title), and it ran from September 1982 to February 1985.

I checked the first Audio Media too and it was June 1990 on the cover.

Hope that helps

A little update on mu:zines since the last time I posted:

We've now scanned over 500 issues (that's 40,000 mag pages!) and have recently passed the 100 active issues on the site mark (106 and counting).

Now a few gaps in the middle have been filled, the general workflow is to rotate through the publications, and do the next earliest 6 issues from each, so each mag gets coverage (ie, 6 MT, 6 SOS, 6 E&MM, 6 HSR and so on) working forward, bit by bit, until we're done (or *I'm* done! ;) )

The first 6 E&MM issues were added in the last few weeks, and I'm currently on the HSR batch, issues #2 and #3 have recently gone up, featuring such notable chaps you may have heard of as George Martin and Stewart Copeland.

Also thanks to Gary Cooper (former editor) we are now archiving Music UK and "In Tune".

Traffic and reach is continuing to grow fairly linearly as bit by bit people find the site, and tell their friends, and link to us. Also, as we continue to add content, we cast a wider net as a lot of people find us by googling for specific gear, topics and artists - the more content, the more they come. And while we've generally been running at a fairly consistent bandwidth use, January has doubled over previous months, and is now hitting roughly the same traffic regularly as we saw that one first time we were linked to on Reddit.

As ever, more to come...
