Magic. Thanks for doing that. I love how he's all about the recording, less about the mix. Inspiring. Plus a heads up on a great free plugin lol.

More like this, please. Better than cooking shows. 8-)

+1 meeeellion ;)

It was a brilliant vid and top marks all round. It certainly shows off just how comfortable Vance is with his work - it takes a big man to show stuff in that detail. And he was great at communicating. Also great to see someone 'old skool' getting things into the DAW right and making his life easier at mix time.

My only (infinitesimally) small niggle was that I'd like to have heard his live room to give the final piece of the jigsaw for the drum sound. But it was still great!

The video is showing as "unavailable" in YouTube on iPad and in the app version of the magazine......I'm presuming a bank holiday glitch?....or my iPad is buggered!

Hmmm. Link is not working via SOS iPad app or you tube SOS channel (says video not available)
However, it is working off the SOS website.....so I shall watch it from there!
Thanks for checking Hugh

Just fantastic. Easily the most useful mixing video I've seen on SOS.... well, the Drum 7 Rooms comes in a close second.

Yeah, it's great. But watching it a second time, this really jumped out at me:

It was Take 17.

Sure, get it right at the recording stage. I mean, that's what this video is all about, right? But Take 17? Three hours?

When recording vocals, my experience is that you should nail it in the first three takes, or else leave it for another day. But Take 17?

Maybe it's the genre. Maybe stuff like this sounds better after it's been bludgeoned into submission.

Doing 17 is quite common in my world... although frankly, the BEST take is almost always the first one... or actually, when the guy is dinking -before- the record button goes off.

But most people can't technically nail a really expressive part in one go, so you -need- the takes to get enough content to create a good comp.

Also: for =me=, it's MUCH easier to match phrases for comping if one gets everything done in the same session.
