More in hope than expectation I downloaded the new control software mentioned in the review and connected my 8i6.

"No hardware connected" was the resolute response. I wonder if Focusrite have any plans to release a firmware update for older kit? Nah! Course not! Want us to buy the new shiny don't they?

The Steinberg UR22 is still £14 cheaper than the 2i2 (Thomann) and you get MIDI and Cubase.

Gen 2 models has a different Xmos controller in it, so the driver set is completely different to account for the change.

If you want that sort of backwards compatibility you need to go for RME.
