iPad app in landscape mode?

Postby ManFromGlass » Fri Oct 13, 2017 2:07 pm

Hi,
Are there any plans for the iPad app to work in landscape mode? Over here you go into any store that sells iPad covers/stands and you would be hard pressed to find one that works in portrait mode like your app. The exception being those holders that attach to mic stands etc.
I don't think the missus would like a mic stand on the breakfast table!

cheers,
Eric

Paul Gilby is the man with the answers, but he's still having a lie down in a darkened room after his success at Synthfest! Hopefully he'll be along soon to advise...

Hi,

Getting back to normal after a very successful SynthFest UK.

The short answer is no, it only works in portrait mode as we layout the screen design to match the vertical print magazine format.

Unfortunately, the underlying app technology does not provide for a responsive design that reflows as you change the device orientation. At the moment the only way to provide a landscape mode would be to redesign every page for both portrait and landscape which is twice the work and we would have to do it for our UK and US magazine apps. So sorry but we simply don't have time in a very tight monthly production schedule to do that amount of work.

However, we have been looking at changing to an HTML5 authoring app that will reflow the content but it's very much early days. We hope to launch something next year but I'm not able to give a date at this time.

Regards
PG.

Super. Thanks Paul. It's no problem exploring the magazine online through the web browser.

I came upon this old thread via a google search, and am reviving it rather than posting something new.

Landscape mode is now dominant on iPad since the tendency for many iPad owners to use it with a keyboard case. I hope that you are STILL considering a landscape option for the app.

Even if it were exactly the same layout as the portrait app, but with top half/bottom half visible, with a scroll (or arrow button press) to toggle the top/bottom half.

Obviously a HTML responsive reflow would be very nice, but as a developer, I acknowledge that is a MOUNTAIN of work for EACH issue thereafter.

Funnily enough, the upcoming June issue will be using a new app which will allow portrait and landscape viewing of the pages. But only on iPads, not Android I'm afraid.

A fully responsive HTML5 app is scheduled for later this year.

Does either of these mean zoom-able? :?:

I found a clever workaround that requires only an Apple TV box and a large flat screen TV.

It's a bigger on the bus, though.

The new App will be the same as the current one, features-wise, except it allows Landscape viewing. Still no pinch/zoom.

The full HTML5 upgrade, due later this year, is a different beast and zoomable.

Currently, the downloadable Full Issue PDF that comes with all Digital subs does offer pinch/zoom and is usable on smartphones/tablets too as well as computer desktops (the Tablet app is only for tablets) . It's in your My Account > Downloads > Back Issues tab.

And all our web articles have clickable images that enlarge for more detail.

Sorry, I have just had it confirmed to me that this Tablet app changeover only allows Landscape on iPads and not on any Android devices.

We haven't created separate landscape layouts for every page, which is what Androids need, as that's simply too much work in a short space of time for production staff to achieve every month.

That's why we'll be moving to an HTML5 fully-responsive app update later this year. It's more flexible.

My poor old eyes have been praying for this!!

Much prefer interactive version to PDF, and it's the text, not the pictures I struggle to see.
