Private Messaged Review Requests

Dear forum users,

We've had a few occasions now where forum users have been PM'd by brand new forum members (who have no posts at all) and asked to review products. They generally target forum members who post frequently, hoping to take advantage of their credibility.

If this happens to anyone, please report it (with the new member's user ID) to the mods immediately.

These are common backdoor tactics employed by SEO company staff to try to get their clients sites/gear mentioned on reputable sites like this one so they can gain from the back-link. It is an abuse of SOS's hospitality and spams the forums.

Thanks

H

I like to think that I stand as testimony to the fact that frequency does not automatically correlate to credibility... :)
Thanks for the heads-up Hugh.

Exhibit A (reported on the date received by me):

Someone using Forum PMs to make contact...

Had a PM this morning from a zero-posts member. Details here:

Would you love to share your ideas on audio products?

Hi Mike, very impressed by your audio gadget experience here. May I have honor to invite you to spare me some attention and talk something over the products in my hand?

I am keen on hearing from you.

Could be genuine, but my antennae are twitching! :)

Just a heads-up in case others get a similar message. I'd advise caution; I've ignored it.

"Over the products in my hand" hmmm
Could be someone who first language isn't writing English or these products are on the small side? Still a very flattering invitation.
I've often wished I set up some kind of protected spam exploration email name (if such a thing is possible) to explore antennae twitching enticements. I've always wondered why somebody would spend time and effort to send spam unless it was for nefarious ends. Perhaps they are attending spam university and these are all part of the training process to move on to bigger and better hacks?
I'd rather write music
