Add a delete post function during the edit period?

Postby Wonks » Tue Dec 19, 2017 1:41 pm

Any chance of adding in a delete post button that appears during the edit period? It would make the mods life that bit easier when you make duplicate posts due to very laggy forum response posting, or when you realised you answered the wrong post or in the wrong forum area.

... and also when discretion overtakes valour... ;)

It's THE key thing I dislike about this forum software. Actually, the only thing really....

Okay, firstly, if anyone wants one of their posts deleted, just PM a moderator or post a report and we'll gladly take care of it ASAP.

Secondly! I can see the sense in this and I've raised this with the team to see if there is a configuration option available to extend the post-delete function to regular posters and not just moderators. If not I doubt it would be practical to add it, but let's wait and see.

The ability for users to delete their own posts has been explored and, unfortunately, there is no way of restricting the function to within the editable time window. But we are very reluctant to allow 'self-deletion' of posts in perpetuity as it can cause no end of confusion and complications to ongoing threads.

So, the two available options remain:

1. Edit your post within the 45 minute window to remove the unwanted content. The mods will usually remove such empty posts to keep threads tidy later.

2. Use the Report-a-Post function to ask the mods to delete a post for you, which will be done as soon as possible.

Sorry this isn't what was wanted or hoped for, but I'm afraid it's the best compromise that can be found with this current forum software.

Thanks Hugh

At least I now know that if wiser counsels prevail and I decide to void a post then I can ask one of the Mods to zap it completely.

Not ideal, but better than having a post which says "Post Deleted".

Of course, as I've said before, the real answer to my scenario is to think very hard before posting in the first place! :D

Wise advice for all of us, I think. ;-)

I've got this right? To remove your post then blank its contents during the 45 minute period and a passing mod will delete it? If that's right then thanks for doing it for us.

I will say that on the fora I've posted in that had a delete button few people actually abused it and I suspect there wouldn't be that many here. Not to worry, the key thing is that, clunky as it may be, there is a solution.

Yes. If you blank the contents (or just leave 'post deleted' in the text), then it doesn't actually matter if one of the mods removes it too... but in general we will just to keep the place tidy --
just as we remove duplicate posts and move posts into more appropriate forums when necessary.

However, this relies on one us us reading the thread in a timely manner, so it helps id you also use the 'Report-a-Post' button which flags it directly for our attention.
