Strange slow-downs

Everything runs fine, then all of a sudden when I click on one of the topics, the browser spins it's wheels for some 10-20 seconds. After this it all seems OK again.
I'm not seeing this with other sites. Any idea what's happening?

I've been having this too, esp on my laptop.
Sometimes a page never loads, I get a message saying "Safari can't open the page.....because the server where this page is located isn't responding".
Usually if I quit Safari I can get into the site fine again.

I've also had some performance issue with the SOS site recently, on all my devices.

Either there are some web server performance issues, or there might be some other internet congestion causing traffic issues, perhaps...

It’s the 30% performance hit, nothing will be the same again.....
I’ll get my silver foil hat......

+1, has happened enough times for me to notice as well. Something fishy in the backend perhaps?

Silver foil?! Now there's a bit of quality from the past! :bouncy:

I wonder if it is that though. They said it would likely effect servers and stuff if i remember right

Well..Now you come to mention it! Yes, I have noticed that but put it down to the ***t I get running a BT Yahoo mail address (£5.00 a friggin month!) when I am with Talk Talk. I am constantly having to log into my email address.

Dave.

There’s been lots of patching of updates on all servers across the net to mitigate against the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, so likely down to that.

So are you saying Ian that the slow-downs are not the result of a meltdown or ghost in the machine, but are due to preventative measures against a meltdown or spectre?

Or am I just getting confused?

I've had issues with pages taking a long time to load. I thought it could well be down to the security updates on servers.

There's a lot of 'flu about...

Maybe some of the electrons have succumbed, so those that are still up and about are having to work extra hard covering for those currently absent.

This was happening before the Intel thing and the patches broke. One of the reasons for a lot of double posts. Main forum page always opens quickly, then it's random form then on, though posting always seems to take 10 seconds or so, sometimes much longer.

Those bloomin' freeloading electrons. Back in the old days of steam we never had that problem. Good ol' steam never pulled a sickie.

Tell you what! SOS could IMHO well do without that little trick that stops your post to tell you someone else has butted in!

I NEVER go back to see. I am always likely to FU anyway so once I have composed my Mag.O. I want to get it posted PDQ. I can deal with arguments later!

Dave.

It's a default setting in phpBB that can't be turned off, without hacking the code, and that makes program increments difficult, so we're reluctant to do so.
