forumusernnnnnn?

Postby ConcertinaChap » Wed Apr 11, 2018 10:18 pm

There seem to be an awful lot of new members with handles of the form forumusernnnnnn. I assume this is something like a default name provided by the forum's underlying software. Could I put in a request that this be inhibited? It's awfully difficult to tell them all apart and it looks ugly, if that makes sense. I sort of get the feeling that anyone who goes for the default name isn't intending to hang around for very long.

Sorry we can’t inhibit this. If someone buys a sub but they do not create a forum username at the time then a default one is allocated.

But the good news is that they have bought a sub.

It still doesn't make it easy for other users. Can't you make them chose a unique name before signing up? Other web sites/forums do.

Or perhaps sending them an automated email encouraging them to pick something more friendly. Or perhaps changing the default format to something more inspiring, like iamnotanumbernnnnnn.

Or call them all Dave. Dave 1, Dave 2, Dave 3 etc.

Or all 'Mr Poo Poo Head' with a number. They'd want to get their name changed pretty quickly.

Well, most of them.

Could the problem be that they don't realise they can/should choose a name when they sign up?

We do require users now to choose their username when registering (and duplicate names are not permitted, as on most sites) -- the forumuser123456 are people who didn't use the forum on the old SOS site, where we used to assign a PIN to user accounts and you could have a separate 'public' forum username.

This was consolidated when we changed to our current web site and PINs were dropped, as too was a separate forum username (for good technical reasons).

Since there were lots of colleges and libraries, companies, studios, students etc who had active subs accounts with us back then, we didn't wish to use their email address as their new username, and we sent out several emails requesting folks change/create a unique username prior to the site changeover. Not everyone bothered reading, or acting on the email, of course. So when the time came to migrate, we had no choice but to populate the username field with something -- hence forumusernnnnnn -- because an account could not exist in our new database without a username.

We don't permit users to change their own username, but there is a web page in our site's HELP where they can request a change ( go here: https://www.soundonsound.com/support/sos-username-change-request ). We get requests on a daily basis -- but the last thing we need is thousands of requests, all of which need manual processing, in a short space of time.

Hard as it may be to believe, not all our registered users/subscribers visit the SOS Forum and if they have an old account with a forumusernnnnnn username, this doesn't really affect their enjoyment of the site's other pages (it's only shown in the top-left of any SOS web page in italics when they are logged in).

So, if someone with a forumusernnnnnn username does post in the Forum, they should be considered as legit as other users in my opinion.

Or that you did, but have managed to find another job, and now want to get your own back on all the disgruntled customers you had to deal with ;)

Attractive as this Wonky idea is (at least from certain perspectives) might there not be a grain of a way forward here? Make the default username ChangeMennnnnn. The user would then have an inducement to change without, hopefully, being deeply offended.

That might have been preferable name prior to the site migration but now that SOS support staff would have to manually change every username, it ain’t gonna fly.

It affects hundreds of thousands of user accounts... we’d have to hire extra staff just to perform username updates.

Ah well, i guess we shall just have to rely on gentle hints when replying, along with a pointer to the support thread.
I'm sure this a cross we can bear between us... ;)

Actually I wasn't suggesting that, just changing the default name for new accounts in future.

There has been no default since we launched this new site on 15 June 2016. All new accounts *must* choose a unique username.

The people with forumnnnnnn usernames are older site users who never created a username for the forum pre-2016. This used to be the necessary way to gain access.

Once we dispensed with PINs for login, username or email address became the new registration method.
